How bad do these 32RH shavings look?

After having this trans rebuilt once and then once more after that at the cost of the rebuilder. It seems like theres always something wrong with it.

I didn’t notice right away, but the torque converter doesn’t seem to lock up. I checked for codes and there was one for the TC. So today I decided to drop the pan and replace the TCC solenoid. And I come to find its full of a non ferrous gritty material. I did use a magnet to scrape around the pan and not much is sticking to it.

It could be anything. But any ideas on what it could be?

Looks like clutches and bands.

The inconsistencies in size and shape are interesting. If you've ever rubbed two pieces of a composite together dry, it creates a similar type of galling effect.

What doesn't fit my hypothesis its that the oil looks in good condition and isn't burnt.

That's my vote.

The oil is what got me too. Its been unchanged for over 12 months and has seen a few thousand kms at least. Surely it would’ve changed colour.

I would clean out that pan & send it for a month and then check back. It's curious that the shavings showed up shortly after a rebuild. I wonder if some tolerances aren't quite in spec. There are a few non-ferrous pieces in there (thrust washers, bushings, and sealing rings come to mind), but I agree that the "dust" is just friction material. The bigger pieces almost certainly are not frictions. I wouldn't sweat it just yet, but at the same time I would 100% ask the rebuilder what was up. Esp if he's supposed to stand behind his warranty. Let him know asap if there might be an issue.

Report back if replacing the solenoid gets you locking up again, that material could be from inside the TC, which should've been replaced during the rebuild.

I’m definitely gonna send it for a while and see what happens. Worst case, I’ll pull it and find another one to put in. Not sure if i want to go down the path of a rebuild again.

Unfortunately living in Australia means that most mechanics work on Nissan patrols and Landcruisers so this trans isn’t too well known in my area.

I receive my new pcm today. so I’ll take the ol girl for a drive and see how it shifts.

I'm no expert but my understanding is shiny flakes are bad. You don't want to drop the pan and see glitter.

I agree. I’m just hoping because I’m not seeing chunks yet it might still be fine for a while. Time will tell, but for now I suppose I’ll just drive it and see what happens.
