I am trying to get a custom tune to transfer from laptop into the ECM using HP Tuners and I keep getting a “Writer Erase: Failed" error message. Does anyone know to fix this? I have tried everything I can think – full battery with a charger on it as well as the laptop plugged with an extension cord, and radio fuse removed. To test my HPT MPVI3 interface module, I hooked it up to my 2008 5.3L Trailblazer. I was able to upload and download just fine. No battery charger, laptop not plugged, and the radio power on (but not turned on). It all worked just fine on the Trailblazer , but failed to write to the Jeep.

I recall a previous post that HP Tuners locks down changing emissions equipment...I'm assuming you're deleting the O2s... unless you complete a training class and get an unlock code.

No first hand experience.

Might want to try something simple like bumping one value in the fuel map a single digit and see if it works.

I’ve never seen that error before. I assume you have the additional license credits to update this ECU, correct? HPT has a pretty good support portal. Have you asked over there?

Yes, I have the correct license. If you don't have a license for the PCM, it won't even let you get to this screen. I am able to upload to the laptop just fine, but it seemingly doesn't even try to download to the ECM. All I am wanting to do is lower the RPM limit to 4300. After I get that completed and downloading figured out, I would like to try to SKIM module. Before doing that though, I need to establish full access to the ECM. I haven't called HP Tuners yet, but it looks like I will have too. I may also try a bench harness to eliminate any possible interference coming from the Jeep itself. There are several post about HP Tuners and none of them mention not being able to access the ECM with HP Tuners so I guess it works for most people. I just got unlocky :(

As for the O2 sensors and other DTCs - deleting DTCs and o2 sensors is ILLEGAL and I would NEVER do that! But YES, you can unlock the greyed out cells after completing a 30 minute course at HP Tuners about emissions, Trust me, after completing the course, you learn so many good things about emissions controls, that you will be retrofitting older cars. I have already ordered an EGR and a catalytic convertor for my 1969 CJ6

Have you written to this vehicle before?

Also I would start by updating the VCM editor to the latest Beta and updating the interface.

I have had issue having my laptop on a charger and I have also had issues with vehicles on a charger. Top off both and try it with out. Also good call on removing the radio fuse. Any electrical noise/ interference can cause failures- any amps or electric fans?

If that is someone else's tune they spent time and money developing i would hope there are safeguards in place to prevent you from removing it from a pcm and installing it on another. That is theft.

I am not trying to download it into a different PCM. I am simply trying to change the rev limiter from 5300 to 4300. I am trying to upload it, make the change, and then download it the same PCM it came out of. No stealing involved

No, I have never written to his Jeep before. But I have written to my 2008 Trailblazer without any issues whatsoever. I don't have any other electrical items such as extra lights, fans, or a winch on my Jeep. I will try it one more time without a charger on either the laptop or the Jeep battery. Thanks for the idea 👍

Resync the interface and check that you have the available or assigned credits for the vehicle.
Click on the VCM Suite info icon in VCM Editor whilst the interface is connected to the pc.
It will list the device id and the details of credits used and available.

Do you have a manual transmission? If so stick a jumper wire between pins 11 and 12 on the C1 PCM connector, then try flashing

Yes, I have the 6 speed manual trans. This sounds a concerning, but I trust your advice. Have tried this and it worked? Worked when otherwise couldn't flash? Can I make a little better jumper and leave this plugged in? Or do I have to remove it before driving the Jeep? Thank you very much for the tip!

Yup, had to do it to a WranglerFix PCM to get it to flash. Otherwise it would read but I would get the exact same error as you when attempting to flash.

Unless it's very secure, I would remove it before driving just to be safe. But I've driven thousands of miles with it in with no issue. (Note: my jumper is much cleaner now than it is in that photo...)

No guarantee it's your issue. My OEM PCM didn't need it. Some other NGC3 applications required it. But easy enough to try.
