Probably a good move on Jeeps part

And hopefully in the United States (and North America). We've been screwed over here with no diesel Wrangler for so long.
This is thanks to all the prius driving tree huggers...look what happened to VW...those cars might have had a trick up the sleeve but still ran clean and got 40-50 mpg. That whole thing was not about the environment, rather money hungry a holes, in my opinion anyways...they tried killing the eco diesel too but thankfully chrysler fiat didn't have any hidden cheats...

I think the anti fossil fuel thing is now here in full force. Even Volvo says they will quit building fossil fuel cars in a few years. And every major city in the world is banning diesel...

And the VW thing was pure stupidity on VWs part. They are fully guilty of trying to deceive the US regulators.

do you guys do know that the Cummins is available now?

you can build a diesel TJ if you want one..and a lot cheaper then Jeep wants for a new Wrangler

Yeah, I saw that. But still, it's 9k of the engine, and you're going to dump probably 4-5k into it for all the other stuff. So it's expensive, but yes, still cheaper than a new Wrangler!

you have to realize that 9K includes an alternator, starter, power steering pump, an engine wiring harness and ecm, etc..

it actually comes with most of the stuff needed to get it going..I was comparing the price pf getting a golen stroker close to the same point (with all the tins, alternator, starter, etc) and the prices were remarkably close

I would do the Cummins over the Golen stroker. All I read about those Golen strokers is bad stuff. Well, that was several years ago when I considered one for my XJ, but still.

Yeah, you get lots of extras to make it an all new powertrain. When I put a new engine in my TJR the long block was $1800.00. Final bill all in with new clutch, since it was apart, new waterpump, rad and lots of other shit was $4600.00, including labor. So $9000.00 is a lot plus thats still in the crate. I used to love diesels, today, not so much. They are definitely not the wise choice $$$ wise. You just need to love diesels and have an open billfold.

Totally agree. For that kind of money I would rather just throw in a V8 if I was given the option.

I wish I could find a stroker long block for $1800, they're more like $5000 with the needed larger injectors

for now I think I'm just going with a standard reman 4.0l long block, I will run it a few years, while hoping that the cummins will become more affordable and more "plug and play" after the early adopters get all the bugs worked out

Ive said it before. The only diesel I would put in a tj would be a 4bt. I would not touch a newer Diesel engine.

Amen to that. My buddy is a diesel mechanic and he'll sit there and tell me all day long how good those old diesel engines are like the 4BT and 6BT. It's not that the new ones aren't good at all, it's just that they have so much more electronics, sensors, and emission BS, that it kind of defeats the purpose of it being a diesel.

I like those old diesels like the 4BT because they are simple and bulletproof.

Yeah, you can't beat the old mechanical diesel engines. Sure they might rattle your teeth out, and you might loose your hearing, but I wouldn't have it any other way, lol.

That's one reason I decided against a 4BT swap in my TJ. I went for a ride in a guy who had done the swap. We had the top off and doors off (which I usually do in my TJ as well). Holy crap... I couldn't even hear myself think, it was so damn loud just idling at stop lights. For that very reason I said no way, it would get so annoying after a short time.

Not to mention that the 4BTs weigh a considerable amount more than a V8.
