Stop buying new Jeeps

A good friend of mine's son bought a new 2021 Wrangler Sahara. Spent a load of cash for it, new. It has been in the shop twice for electronic chip issues. Sat once I think he said for 2 weeks waiting on parts....chips are in short supply. Lots of cash for a vehicle that you can't drive cause it sitting in a dealer shop@!
If that's the case, than the dealership should cover the payments until its out...

The thing I don’t understand about the JL is the funky front axle disconnect. The front right half-shaft disconnects from the differential which results in the front driveshaft not turning when on the highway. Presumably this saves some gas. But if the driveshaft is not turning, the left half-shaft will cause the spider gears to spin around like crazy. Is that any better than just letting the driveshaft spin?
How is this any more advanced than a 1984 Cherokee ? same crap different day.:cautious:

How ever this is the same concept used by everyone's 4X4 system today, Chevy, Ford, Ram, Toyota eta.....

This is not like locking hubs. Only the right wheel is disconnected and the inner half of the right axle shaft turns in the reverse direction to the outer half. This of course means that the differential spider gears will be spinning around like crazy. I have heard that this concept was first tried back in the early 70s but was quickly abandoned. It definitely is not used by everyone’s Chevy, Ford, Ram, Toyota, etc.
 
I disagree with the writer, I want people to buy them. Buy them all.

My 9 year old son wants a mojito green 4 door rubicon. He has saved every penny he has ever gotten. Birthdays and work pay from neighbors. The boy has over $2000.

So when he turns 16 and the Coolness of the Jeep that is now 9 years old. My son will be able to pick a very clean never abused JL cheap

Interesting, as I recall the early 70's you had: manual lock out hubs, automatic hubs, full time 4X4, or drive flanges.

Look at Chevy IFS since 1988 to today, Dodge ( Ram ) trucks since 1994, Ford IFS 4X4, Toyota pickups 89 and up, Tacoma 1997, (AAD) and up,
Jeep Cherokee 84 -90 and Wrangler YJ's pre 95.
About the ONLY exception is Ford Super Duty, and some older Toyota HiLux pickups, some Nissans, Samurai's etc...( lock out hubs ).

Please take a look online at CAD, ( Center Axle Disconnect ) All these examples work the same way, disconnecting one axle side from the diff. allowing free rotation through the spider gears. Just like new Jeeps.
Some of the older systems used vacuum to move the shift collar, GM used a "thermal actuator" to shift ,( Real Dumb )
Most newer systems are electric shift.

Personally, I like the TJ and 91 and up Cherokee direct drive setup.
However if you had extreme lift and driveshaft angles, lock out hubs would be your friend on the highway !

If this was the only issue with new Jeeps I could get around it. However with all the other multitude of of electronic nannies, electronic power steering, auto start / stop, 2nd mini battery under the floor, and touchscreen controlled crap that is less than reliable count me out.

Hell, seems like the new Jeep has issues even building a 3.6 pentastar that doesn't missfire.:rolleyes:
 
He said to buy them because they are cool. But don't add every option because its like putting lipstick on a pig

I would trade most of the options they offer in newer Jeeps for better suspension, drivetrain, axle and wheel options.

It took the Bronco to knock sense into Jeep regarding factory drive train upgrades.

I sold an LJ so I could buy a JL when it came out. It was a OK daily driver and an OK Jeep. I had issues one day with the traction control freaking out on the middle of an 18 mile one way trail around Durango. It was my Ah-Ha moment. I decided right there that I wanted simple. No ABS, No Traction Control, No Power Door Locks, No Engine Start/Stop, nothing.

Traded in the JL on a used Honda Pilot to drive to work and picked up another LJ to build my way. It will be the last Jeep I own most likely.
