32RH problems

If the cable is binding a little it may be wise to loosen the clip, go under the Jeep and make sure to pull it all the way closed.

After you get it set up, go under the Jeep and open and close the transmission side valve by hand. That's how I diagnosed my hard shifting. The cable had too much friction and was causing the valve to close slowly/stay slightly open.
Will do. That sound like a probable cause.
I’ll also take it loose at both ends and make sure it’s no bound.

I've never dealt with a bad cable.

24 years + a bad oil leak + living half a block from the beach + desert dust. Mine was real crunchy when I pulled it out. It had a little extra grab at the end that stopped it from flipping into idle.
The new one is smooth as butter.

I used to get a "kick in the ass" if I went from acceleration to engine braking too fast.

The only thing I've seen is the cable puke out of the housing on the shifter cable when heat from the exhaust gets to them.

well anything is possible when it comes to corrosion

Hey y’all , well I’ve figured out more about the problem. I have a good strong 1st gear. And can make it shift to third after tapping the gas peddle. The torque converter locks and unlocks fine. BUT no second gear. I took it in and out of 4low and high and while in low it shifted into second for me one time.
Tell me if it might be the transmission Governor and how to fix or change that .?
Thanks !!
I’ve also heard of some unconventional ways of unsticking the trans Governor.

Still at a loss of what to do.
A great trans mechanic of “ours” said that second gear was a weak link in that trans.
But it could be built back stronger for off road use as well as daily driving. ( I’m summing up our conversation) .
I have found another 2002 - 32RH trans with 120,000 miles on it.for $600. I just worry if it’s worth the trouble with that many miles on it.
I tried the 25mph test of shoving it into park for 2seconds then back to drive and all I got was zzzzzzzzz. It didn’t help.

You know the one you have works and just needs a good rebuild. I'd do that.

Bummer that your swap transmission is having trouble. And I agree with Blaine, you should just rebuild the one you have. Another used one could have problems as well.

There’s a good thread about transmission problems and possible upgrades that can apply to our Jeep model transmission.

Maybe discuss some of that info with your transmission repair guy.

I hope you get this all sorted out and repaired in time for next year’s wheeling season!

Jerry, if I notice a vibration around 2500 rpms while in gear , in park and in neutral does that 100% point to the torque converter?

Or balancer, what did shop say was wrong with the transmission?
2nd gear band came apart and ruined the drum.
