Thanks. I guess that should worry a lot of Rubicon owners.
I know for a fact it should worry a few of them who got a call that somehow the working rear locker that was fine when it came in is now grenaded after a short test drive just to make sure everything is dialed in. Did you want us to fix it by replacing it with an ARB, something else, or just leave it up to you?

At least they're still drivable to get home and schedule a replacement at your own leisure.

Driving around town with a failing Rubicon LSD makes for a pretty exciting week. You never know when the Jeep wants to go straight when you try otherwise. And the loud cracks and pops attract a lot of attention.

I really need to budget for an ARB, I bet this year mine goes.

I know of more than a few TJ Rubicon rear lockers that have been torn up via some spirited driving on the street around corners. We likely would have just attributed the failures to normal attrition rates due to age and mileage were it not for the trip to Moab by a large group off of the ROF. They had an abnormally high failure rate running open there. That's when we started paying attention to it and what the failure consisted of. Across the board it was the small gears used to deliver the limited slip function that broke and sent the pieces into the rest of the assembly.

High traction differentiation and trying to slow down side to side tire spin rates and equalize them is going to put lots of stress on the limited slip portion of the locker.
Gotta love revelations like this :cautious: . Good to know now instead of after a few years of hotrodding.

I'm guessing a front wheel dig with the rear open might be a bad idea..

So far, TJ Fest just kind of happens. Somehow.
A few TJ buddies locally have reservations for April 14 - 18 so looks like the week before but after EJS. Going looking for a campsite (rotsa ruck). Might be giving the Jeep wave to everyone heading in from the west.

So.. Slickrock RV says a 2nd site needs to be reserved for toy trailers. My buddy says there's 2 parking spots for each site. Anyone here confirm either of those? Maybe I should get 10 day reservation and hang for the TJF, too.
10 days in a frickin' tent?
Can't double pull the jeep behind the 5'er. Done it with SxS but LJR is heavy.

See my link for Yellow Circle Road. I've never been there, but looks fine to leave your trailer/camp setup while you're away.

I can’t get my head around this. On road would certainly be a high traction surface, and I don’t think LSD’s are coming apart driving down the street. I would think what would kill an LSD off road would be a low traction situation where the LSD is fighting to keep the wheels locked. What am I missing?
Mine grenaded on the street in normal driving. While making a routine turn, the rear made a loud pop and jumped sideways. As @jjvw said, the drive home was nerve racking and filled with random and unsettling noises! :cautious:

Did you destroy the entire gearset or just the LS? I don't know bumpkus about diffs really.

It happens even when the administrator who took over TJ Fest like it was his idea and then charged for it and sold products for it and then unsurprisingly got sick and couldn't make it.
I'm still waiting for my hat. 🙁🤣

Where's the roster of attendees? :D
Guess if I'm at home for TJF I can go sit on I-80 and watch all the TJ traffic go by.

Dino are you able to program the new units for GMRS tx?
I don't know if there is a work-around for the "new" units. The link I posted is for the old units I bought last year and there may still be inventory on those. If the supplier switches those out for new units at the old price, they're fools.

If they are being sold as "ham radios", they are not legal to modify. If they are being sold as "commercial radios" its 100% legal to modify for the ham radio bands...which would probably get you GMRS too. Personally, as I've stated many times, I HATE these radios but they work and are cheap. Buyer beware!
