Today we tackled getting the fasteners countersunk. I could not use the existing slot holes that the skid came with due to how oversized they were. So with some Wizardly advice I decided to drill new holes and install new nutserts in the frame. This allowed me to countersink the bolts.

Talk about thinking outside the box. So simple yet I never would have thought of that as a solution.
 
I think this is because most folks find replacing a frame nutsert intimidating. The reality is it's surprisingly simple!
Clearly they haven't installed sliders and corners if a nutsert seems scary lol.

I'm about to do gears for the first time in almost 20 years. I'll admit that one has me pensive. I will either go well, or I'll be buying new gears and doing it again! ;)

Just take your time and be patient. I'm going on 4 days of working on mine and will have at least one more day if not two before their done. When I was doing all the time I could know out a gear install in 4-6 hours per axle.
It's been over 12 years for me so yes I do know how you feel.

It's been over 12 years for me so yes I do know how you feel.
Good news is I will be in no hurry and the axle is out. That alone makes it much easier!

If my gears fail or I swap to an arb down the line I'm going to attempt gearing next time. Looks like a fun thing to learn and downtime doesn't matter to me. Looking forward to following your installation.

I'm happy about the fact that the HP30 doesn't use a crush sleeve like the LP30. That makes things a little easier for me!

I was a bit intimidated when the idea was proposed. But after a couple minutes I realized it was a fairly simple solution. Under the frame rails and sliders is where we tend to pass large rocks so the smoother the better was the philosophy.

I think I'll need to copy that. I'm still thinking I'll swap to the ultra low skid one day though so I'm not in a rush.

Agreed. There has been a lot of things I most likely wouldn't have attempted other than from others coaching me thru the process. Just cross my fingers I've done it correctly.

Yes I wish I would have built a crossmember mount and a separate skid. But I can’t imagine pushing my tcase up higher as my DS angle is 21 degrees now.

It had the dreaded harmonic drumming vibration at 60+ mph. So I first checked pinion angles. The rear pinion angle was out by 7. Thought that would be it, nope. Adjusted to within approx 1. Felt vibrations lessened, but harmonic remained. So I removed rear then front and drove without each. Problem went away when front was removed. I found the front was out by a lot. Adjusted pinion up until vibe stopped. It is within 2* of DS angle. Still have a slight vibration above 65, but not a harmonic pulsing mind numbing vibration.
That’s when I discovered the whole track bar interference and read how to properly set bump stops. Had the front set pretty close.
While fighting a stiff steering issue, the term “scrub radius” was explained to me. Due to haveing 3.75 back spaces wheels and 1-1/4 wheel spacers my scrub radius was very excessive. I removed the spacers and now I can turn with my locket engaged. So at this point I decided it was a good time to revised my front bump stops due to tires being moved in. So I rechecked my front and have it set. Once I raise my front upper shock mounts 1” I will be using 100% of my rancho 999255 fronts.
