Now that I'm running a tablet for navigation, keeping it charged has become a bit of an issue. Here's the solution!

The BANDC PJH-RS-0123 power port. Got one on order from @Chris's favorite online retailer. Two ports, a 1 amp and a 2.1 amp for charging tablets. Less than $10 sans shipping. Has a built in dust cover and a screw back mounting system. It fits where the stock cigar lighter goes, but you do have to trim the hole slightly bigger.

That's pretty cool! I need to do something like this, really bad actually. Everything these days takes USB, and I don't yet have a USB charger like this in my TJ!

I just ordered one. This was on my to-do list, you just reminded me of it. It’s cheap enough that I can’t put it off any longer!

Sounds like an opportunity for another "How To:" @Chris.

I agree, this is an easy one too. Nowadays cars come with this from the factory. Our 2015 Subaru Outback has USB ports right in the center console and in the cubby hole in the dash. No one uses cigarette lighters anymore, right?

Hell, I don't even use one, and I smoke. Just not in the car, Jeeps in the house or around the kids / grandkids anyone else who may be offended.

Even if I did smoke, I wouldn't do it in the car. I wouldn't want to have my car smelling permanently like smoke, that's no good. The cigarette lighter in automobiles is a relic of the past if you ask me. The CD player ought to be there as well. Can't recall the last time I ever listened to a CD. I always stream my music via Bluetooth to my receiver.

I tried to listen to CD's on one of my back roads solo adventures. Did you know that CD players skip? lol It was a fail. Either slow down or stop playing CD's. I chose to not listen to my music for a couple of hours. Who knew an SE could be a "Fast Mover"?

I grew up with CDs when they first started coming out. So yeah, I know how bad they can skip!

How about back in the fifties they used record players in the car....Talk about skipping !!! lol (although they had land yachts with super soft rolling suspension) This one is from a Chrysler.

Those didn’t last long, I remember reading all about them.

The fact that my Subaru Outback pretty much drives itself when you put it in auto pilot mode is a testament for how far we’ve come!

I’ll just butt in to say my Jeep smells like an English library after years of cigar and pipe smoke in it.

Anyways, for additional power, I picked up a small inverter like this (https://homedepot.app.link/2DyJwBORhH ). It’s only 100w, but it will charge a cell phone and tablet in no time. It will also power my laptop for work.

I hardwired it to the open slot in the fuse panel so no ugly cables in the cabin.

Just ordered one of these myself, and curious if I can just eliminate the factory lighter and use it's power and ground for this? The socket on mine is so worn out it won't hold a portable charger and I won't need it at all once I get this... plus, I'm lazy and would rather use something that's already there. haha!

I have one coming today. I am going to pull the lighter and place it there. It should work fine but I believe the hole will need to be enlarged.

Good point. For phones it will work albeit may be a bit slow.

Correct depending on the phone you want higher amps. I use the Galaxy S7 Active and it has a 4000mA battery and if the discharge rate is higher than the charging rate you will not benefit. There are apps out there that will show you the discharge rate of your device and also the charge rate of your currently charger. Something as simple as a good USB cord makes a world of difference. I have had in the past isues where I was using my previous as a navigation gps and by the time I got to where I was going I had less battery than when I started even though it was plugged in.
