Hello all!

So i just noticed today that i have the P0302 code, first check engine code on my TJ it has 61k miles on it. It idols very low and sputters when accelerating but then its perfectly fine when it gets going.

I'm thinking this might be some sort of electrical issue and here's why. I bypassed my clutch safety mechanism on my Jeep about 5 or 6 months ago so i can start it without pushing the clutch in, Now this misfire happened at the exact same time that my clutch safety mechanism failed as in yesterday morning. They are perfectly correlated with one anther. I now have to push in the clutch to start the jeep.

Is it possible that something short circuited (I'm not familiar with electrical work) and some of the fuses on the circuit board got fried? Wonder if anybody has had issues like this before.

I'll replace the fuse after work today and see if anything different happens.

I’m not sure how an electircal issue would cause your number 2 piston to change its size….

;)

But seriously - how did you bypass your clutch safety switch? Specifically - how did you do it that it started operating again?

Its an 05 all i did was put a fuse into the Clutch override slot on the fuse board under the hood.

The only thing is that my 4wd light is always on. That is until yesterday morning when I started having the misfire.

Now it operates like normal i have to depress to clutch to start it and the 4wd light comes on only when I'm in 4wd. I did this for off-roading to help preserve my clutch and just incase i stalled in deep water i wouldn't have to depress the clutch.

If it was a fuse on a coil/injector circuit then you'd have a no run condition since they both run on same circuit for all cylinders and have constant BATT+v when key is in run position. They both receive a ground pulse command from the pcm drivers.

So I'd probably pull a spark plug before going deep into a misfire

OK thanks for that info on the electrical stuff.

First thing I'm going to do are the spark plugs.

Just a little history when I first got this Wrangler it did idol low around 500 rpm but it was smooth, no issues at all. 38k miles.

Last summer I had issues where I would go to start the Jeep and it would always start but it would take a few seconds for the engine to start firing, from reading around it sounded like a fuel pump issue this has just reoccurred with this check engine light.

Last September I changed the OPDA due to the monkeys in a barrel thing. This didn't change the startup issues right away but about 2 months later everything was perfect on startup. I now have that startup issue again where it takes a few seconds to start (obviously due to the misfire).

During my ownership my idol went from around 500, to around 700, and now its back down again, the only thing I've ever changed in the engine bay was the OPDA during this time period last September. It almost seems like these issues occur when it starts to get warm out, its now about 70 everyday in NJ.

Sorry for the ranting.

If you cycle the key on (for a few seconds) and off a few times before trying to actually start it, does it start up right away when you hit the starter??

This doesn't seem to make a difference so that ruled out the fuel pump. However in the past this starting issue just resolved itself. The only thing i can correlate it to is possible warmer weather? It did get better after i changed my OPDA but it was a couple months later. It literally just went away on its own.

Oh I totally forgot to include this here, at the same time that this happened, and my clutch bypass failed, my radio now also intermittently sputters in and out. This also started occurring yesterday morning exactly when I got the check engine light and i noticed the misfiring. I have never experienced this before.

Ok i appear to have fixed the issue and it was my Ignition coil. 2 of the coils where cracked. So we will see how this plays out in the coming week.
