Looking For Gear Pattern Input

Absolutely, not much variance in shim thickness that came with the kit. That is why it was close before making different stacks and just guessing threw it off haha. Will have some different patterns tonight or tomorrow.
Don't get discouraged. You're doing good. Keep at it. Good folks with good help here.
 
Yeah going to grab another one today. Don't really have any other shims though, just what came in the min install kit from REV, so if I cant get it with what I have I will probably need to get some more shims.
You were close with that first pattern. Get your measuring problem fixed and go back to that setup and see what options for shim combinations you can come up with.
 
Well, win-lose scenario crank sensor quit on me today... So no practice which sucks, but now I can figure out the gearing situation and was able to grab a micrometer before it quit haha.

You were really close on that first pattern. Go back to that whatever it was. Then like Nashville said, figure out the combination.
Just tried a bunch of things and just kept getting further away. Going to pack it in and restart fresh with that original pattern in the morning. Will definitely need some more pinion shims though (n)

My first time doing a gear swap was on a Silverado I used to have, took a BUNCH of tries… My latest was on my jeep, front took 2, back took 3 (bent a shim) to get it right. And that was with rebuilding the ARBs front and rear at the same time. The difference? Measuring calipers, proper tools, experience…vs guessing.

I like seeing posts like this. One can't be "always learning" by paying someone else to solve one's problems. Diagnostic skills are not taught very much in general anymore (technical degrees being one exception), and learning how to set up gears teaches one more than just how to set up gears. It teaches diagnostics - the ability to identify the cause of a problem in order to develop a solution.

Stick with it, Morks. You're building your diagnostic skill set that will serve you well beyond saving money on your TJ. That's the power of Semper Discens...
 
So this is the latest pattern, been on and off raining so haven't got much done... Pretty sure it is the exact same as the first pattern that I had. Everything I had written down got soaked with a nice, out of nowhere pouring rain (the axle was under a tarp!!) lol. If this is too deep I have a few choices for removal, and replacement. Thanks for all the help thus far!

That does look like you are very close to where you started. You do look to be a touch deep and I would try to pull .003 out of the stack and try again.

Raining here again. I will take out .003 tomorrow morning hopefully and post it up!

Had a quick break in the rain. Headed to practice now, however, this is the pattern after removing .003 My guess is it is a touch shallow and add 0.001? That is just me trying to learn and make the dana 30 quicker! This pattern is with a backlash of 9 thousandths.

Drive is starting to look good... Coast is shallow... But I thought your patten before removing 0.003 was shallow too. Since you don't know what your 1st pattern was, I'd go much deeper from what you are... Like 0.010 thou. See what that pattern looks like. It  should be obviously deep, if the rest of your set up is predicable. Since your backlash is a bit loose, moving the pinion that far will probably not require and change they're either (high gain for low effort) With that, you have it bracketed and can really start to dial it in.

I tried with the 0.01 shim, deeper than the original, and makes its way too deep. After that, I run out of shims from what came in the kit. From that pattern (with the .003 removed) I can only add a shim that is 0.013.

edit: that's where the I need more shims came in. In that pattern before the .003 removed is the drive too deep?

Both your drive and coast look shallow to me in that pattern. I'm not an expert though... You really should get some more shims.

Hm okay. I did like the fact there was a slight line between the tops and nothing harsh on the bottom where it made contact (before removing .003)... Going to wait for a couple of others to chime in and then pick some up after most likely.
