No, not always, but enough. I've had my arguments with engineers, even when I was one, to take the extra step and make it easy for the techs that are working on their crap...

I’ve worked as an engineer in the car, motorcycle, and powersports industries, and every single engineer I worked with worked on their own vehicles. As such, we all paid attention to maintenance difficulties. There are many other factors that come into play (finance guys telling you the vehicle cost is too high, marketing guys telling you there need to be more features, customers telling you it’s not fast enough, etc.) to focus blame on the engineer. Blame is hard to focus, but it starts in upper management and trickles down.

True enough, but in my particular circumstance, profit wasn't a motive - and what I was discussing/arguing about had to do with circuit board layout where the pricing wasn't affected anyway (yet some of the engineers didn't want to bother with what I was talking about). But with cars, car companies are no longer engineering driven; marketroids, sales droids and bean counters rule the roost to the complete detriment of the product.
