American Iron Offroad Balljoint Deletes

I asked Dynatrac why they dont offer their balljoints for the TJ. Their response was that they were not aware of TJ's having ball joint problems. I think i agree with them. Their BJs are extremely nice but the cost of them is many sets of spicers. If the average guy on 35's running hard trails can get multiple years out of a set of spicers, why spend $5-600 on a set of BJs?

The main reason i asked Dynatrac was i seem to believe the only difference between JK and TJ balljoints is one of the tapers is different.

I no longer believe this to be true anymore. Spicer balljoints don’t seem to be what they used to be.

I wouldnt even believe dynatrac would say that. the only difference in the tj and Jk ball joint is the lower joint taper. the jk uses the same joint as the wj.

All they need to do is make a different taper pin for the lower but they don’t.

Mine got replaced with Yukon/Apex ball joints 2weeks ago. about 17 months wobble free and started violently shaking again once in a while. a few weeks later, still driving it, it became completely undriveable. the rebuild kit was more than I wanted to spend and I didn't want to wait for them to arrive when I already keep the apex in stock. my jeep is daily driven on 37's as well as used as a loaner for customers, and wheeled hard weekly, not just once in a while.

So is that a negative review for the product or more convenience?

Did you follow up with Josh at all if have any concerns. Not that have experience but he seems very open to feedback from his FB page.

I read this as almost 'off topic'. He decided not to buy the kit because he already had other parts.

The part about the rebuild kit being too expensive is a bit odd. Isn't it like $125? Too much to spend?

I believe the reason this kit is attractive is because you can only replace your ball joints so many times. Whereas with the delete kit, I assume you can do the rebuild as many times as you want.

It was an odd reply given he got 1.5 years with very hard usage and the whole reason for install is to quickly change Ball joints, and the rebuild price is reasonable. I thought I recall him welding in the cups as well, or was that on a different rig?

Bought once every 2 years is all they last on 37s.

How many times do you think ball joints need to be replaced? I've replaced mine once total for two TJs since 1996 running 35's most of those years.

Yeah, basically depends on how big your tires are and how much you wheel and beat on your rig. I'm also on 37's with a Dana 44 front. So they're going to wear out quicker than if I had 35's or a Dana 60 up front.

Just mention death wobble and the place that does work on your Jeep is going to tell you ball joints need to be replaced whether they actually do or don't. That's why I like Blaine doing all my work. He thought I would need them, so I ordered the BJ delete kit. Then he looked at mine and I didn't actually need them yet, it was something else. So I was able to return the kit and get my money back. I figure most places would change them anyway so they can charge you for the labor.

I guess what I'm trying to determine is if these BJ Delete's are good upgrade for some who is running 35s. Will these close that weak spot of a TJ Dana 30/44?

Once that question is answered, then we can move on to say would the same hold true if someone moved to 37s on the same TJ axles? Obviously, the BJ might no longer be a concern with a Dana 30 running 37's, but it would be nice to know if someone were to be running a JK 44 on a TJ with the same Cs.

Definitely not needed for 35's.

I hear you that they aren't needed, but would these offer a true upgrade? Are they in fact stronger than a spicer BJ? They are advertised as an upgrade, just wondering if $600 is worth it, even if a possible advantage is a repair in the field where a standard BJ requires specialized tools.

I've busted BJs before and I was lucky I was close to the trailer and my buddy was able to drag me back. It might be worth being able to carry spares that can be replaced fairly easy. Even if the strength is not much more or equal, they may be worth it to some.

I have been on 35's for 22 years and never needed new ball joints. I only installed new Spicer ball joints 12 years ago because I already had the front end apart on a used TJ I bought while installing the Big Brake kit. Ball joints are NOT an issue with 35's. Not in the least, not at all.
