Washington Washington members that live to wheel

Heading to Evans on Sunday, probably not much wheeling, mainly getting the kids out to play in the snow. But ya never know.
Let me know if anyone wants to come

Sunday is a no go for me. I was thinking about heading to Walker tomorrow morning but that is iffy. I am taking the week off and have aspirations to try the Cashmere to Ellensburg section of the WABDR but that might be a real stretch. lol

Some snow at the top of Walker. Pretty nice this morning.

Fun day today at Evans creek with the kid. The rest of the group had to cancel due to sick kids so it was just Nolan and me. Ran into a couple pretty nice black and aluminum TJ’s airing down just before the gravel road that offered to let me tag along with them, but this was mainly to get my son out to play in the snow so we politely declined their offer.
Not much but got a couple pic’s, not much snow yet

Quick question for Washington folks. Regarding the fender laws, does anyone know if this is considered a moving violation? I know what the law states and I found the ~$135 penalty, but I am not sure what the residual risk is regarding increased insurance rates. I am not really worried about it, but I am considering highline fenders and I like the idea of them being very tight, FWIW.

Apart from the practical side of things on the E side of WA where I have no issues with less than full "flare" coverage, that's an interesting question. The effect produced is only experienced while moving. That is the definition of a moving violation, such as running a red light, in contrast to violations related to paperwork like lack of insurance. On the other hand, it may be a violation just to have a less than full coverage flare on the car, which would put it in a category that I'm not aware of.

I believe it's just an infraction. I got pulled over twice in my '97 in the 4 years I drove it over there. The first was by a State Patrol and he never said a word about no flaps or the flares not covering the whole tire. The second time was by a Snohomish Co. Sheriff's Deputy and it was for no mud flaps and insufficient flares. I ended up getting a fix it ticket. I built some removable mud flaps and took it to the closest State Patrol office and the officer came out, looked at it and said, "yep you have flares and mud flaps, you're good to go". Signed off on my fix it ticket and said have a good day.

My tires stuck out a good 2 to 3 inches past the flares. I just made the mud flaps stick out as wide as the tires and they left me alone after that.

I've been pulled over 4 times in the past 15 years for either flares or mud flaps. I never got a ticket but got a fix it ticket like redvltj did. But I do know of sheriffs and State Patrol officers who are LOOKING for people in violation of these laws and will pull you over and depending on the day give you a ticket.
It's why I went with the Metal Cloak fenders and flares. I can take the flares off to run tight trail and put the flares back on when driving on the street.

IMO why bring undo attention to yourself? If you are running a no flare fender and get pulled over it just gives them one more reason to look for stuff. While many here dislike Metal Cloak it is one answer to the problem. Without doing something completely custom it's about it.

Get a life.

We have a lot of real problems in this world, like child porn, drug trafficking, wife abuse. Fucking assholes pulling people over for flares. They should be shot on sight. I'm not fucking around. That's the kind of incongruity that makes me want to pull out my AR and blow some fucking legislator away.

Thanks for the feedback. I am a ways away but I caught a bit of a rock crawling bug and have been pushing the jeep through harder obstacles. Which has got me thinking a bit differently about which direction I want to go.

I'd love to go to a GenRight 0" boulder fender. It's definitely better for rock crawling. I'm just stuck in this state.

If you think & understand WHY they have these laws in this state then it isn't such a big deal. With the amount of tire spray you'd have if we had rigs like are legal in CA & AZ it's more understanding. How many times have you been behind a semi and bitched about the fact that you couldn't see due to the spray off his duals? So if you have our tires throwing spray off them onto the car behind?

Now once your rig is 30 years old... Whole nother rules can apply. I've only got 4 more years to go.

The State Patrol's website explains the law in those terms. So I get it. If I play the odds, I'd probably be ok.

What's the 30 year thing? Collector vehicle?

Zero times. The reason is below...

I know why the rule is there. I still don't think its valid. If people actually followed road rules they wouldn't be in the position of riding up an 18 wheelers ass. Besides, we're not an 18 wheeler, and there's one damn road in this state they drive 75mph on. I-90.

Is anyone going to respond to the part that's important?

child porn
wife abuse
drug trafficking
et. al.

And we are spending our time pulling people over with insufficient flares or mud flaps. Get your priorities straight, or just be plain damn obvious that you don't give a fuck about people and real problems.

Yes. And it's another one of those funny things about WA compared to many other states. Most states it's 25 years old but in WA it's 30.

Not gunna debate it nor try to say it's right or wrong but it's the law. You can choose to not follow it and if you get pulled over and get a ticket then you just pay it and move on. Same a speeding.
