I need recommendations for a wire crimp tool. The SE needs some wiring repair where U-haul installed trailer wiring for the PO. It looks like they used two rocks and scotch tape. It's causing intermittent issues with flashers and turn signals.

Also a recommendation on a small heat gun for shrink tubing would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!

Not a big fan of crimp connectors on Jeeps as they are never sealed to the elements. I prefer to solder all connections and sealing with heat shrink.

Bought this last year and it works great for soldering and heat shrink, I should have bought this years ago and ditched the soldering gun

Glad you asked! I've been using this heat gun going on 5 years now:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EU2T8GG/?tag=wranglerorg-20

It works for all my needs, but I mostly only use it when removing tough decals, or when using heat shrink on wiring.

As for wire crimpers, I've probably had this thing for close to a decade now:

It works well, and I have zero complaints about it whatsoever.

Basic stuff, but it's served me well for all my wiring needs (which mostly ends up being guitar wiring harnesses or Jeep wiring).

Nice! Thanks for the link.

I used to work for a company called Astro Tool. MilSpec wiring crimps for aircraft and armored vehicles. We did a lot of testing on wire termination. I found out that I do better with crimp joints.

Thanks Chris. Looks like a good quality, basic tool.

Here's a selection of my current tools:

Wire stripper(s), Buchanan terminal crimper, and an Ideal zip tie tool.
The Buchanan is going out of adjustment, so it's getting replaced.

We built wiring repair kits for M1 tanks and the B1-B. Really cool, but more expensive than I could afford.

A zip tie tool? How does that work?

Loop the zip tie around what you want to hook up. Set the tool for the proper tension. Squeeze the handle and the tool sets the proper MilSpec tension and cuts the tail off the zip tie. It's pretty cool, actually. Perfect zip tie every time. Not too loose, not to tight. Trimmed flush.

Crazy! I always just did my zip ties by hand and then cut the end off with my clippers. I should have known they've have a tool for this.

Haha, this is probably what MPs carry around to cuff the bad guys, huh?

This is like one of those tools you absolutely do not need, but you want to have just because you're a guy... and us guys like to collect tools (I'm the same way, ask my wife).

Nah, on Shore Patrol we just looped them together and hung them on our gun belt. How tight we pulled them depended on how drunk and how much of an a-hole you were.

A properly crimped connector is almost always better than a soldered connector (less prone to vibration breakage). To weather proof it just heat shrink over the crimp connector.
