Car pics too cool not to share

My friend with the VWs and his dad built a similar car a few years ago. Theirs was a dark candy apple red (body and frame) with matching 16" steelies, a 429 Ford and aluminum interior. Instead of a fabric or metal top, they used a piece of dark red tinted lexan which sucked bad when the sun was beating down. I think they might have gotten a little more aggressive on the chop and channel too, as that car was less than waist high on me (6') and would scrape the license plate on hard accelerations. I might be able to find a pic, I'll have to dig around. Hell, they might still have the car.

I'd like to see that car^^^ with a set of Radir wheels on it...

My mom's stories about the Chevy II.

In 1963 she had a decent enough job to buy her first car. Her dad took her to the Chevrolet Dealer where she saw the brand new Corvette which at about $4500 she knew she couldn't afford it so Grandpa guided her to the Corvair for roughly $2500 which she test drove and hated for some reason unknown to me but if I had to guess "What would people think about me(her) in a car like that?" The next test drive was the Chevy II that she loved so much she bought for $3500. (Yes those prices were what she told me at least 40 years ago so might not be accurate but probably close).

A year or so after buying it she found out that many people would polish up their chrome bumpers and stuff with SOS pads and damn, if it works good on that the whole car needs done. I guess it looked really good when wet but Grandpa came home from work and couldn't believe what he saw. He ended up taking her and the car to the local body shop where the only repair they could do was repaint the whole car. After seeing their response to what that would cost the manager told them to just ignore it and leave the car dusty if they ever go to sell it.

Eventually she gave it to her sister who was still in high school. I don't know if the details were ever mentioned but she did get in a fight with some classmate while driving home and ended up driving the car really fast up the cement steps leading to the school. Luckily she just did the first set of steps and drove through the yard to leave, maybe on a flat or two. Had she gone up the second set of steps she'd have drove into the school.

Wow… quite the story… how could someone not like a Corvair though?? I love those cars!

Somebody drove a VolksWagen down the main hall of our H.S. when I was a Junior. I don't think administration ever found out who was involved (I wasn't). I guess they got several burly guys to hoist it up the steps, then drove down the steps on the other end. (???) There were two steps about 1/3rd of the way down the hall, a pair of ramps were kept to one side to be used as needed for whatever wheeled contrivances needed them - I suppose someone lined those up ahead of time as well.

Reminds me of one of my dad’s stories. When he went to Cornell, he would commonly go for 5 mile runs in the middle of the night because I guess that’s just something he enjoyed… One time he saw a bunch of guys who were taking apart a car, I don’t remember what kind, in the middle of campus. He ran by them again slightly later and saw them carrying all of the parts up ladders onto the roof of one of the buildings. The next day, that car was up on the roof, fully assembled. I don’t think the guys who did it ever got caught… I love the dumb stuff like this that people do. I just wish that someday I can be a part of it 🤣
