Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

You are now officially the Loom Master.

I think you mean, “Fruit of the Loom.”

For everyone doing the magnum swap here is a little bit more about getting the distributor installed correctly and then setting the fuel sync.

I've said this more than one but it doesn't hurt to say it again, on the magnum engines Dodge was chasing it's own tail trying to correct issues it was having and in doing so they did what were called death flash on many PCM's that just killed the performance of the magnum engines. IMO it's always worth it to get a tune for your rig once you get done with the swap.

Do some research on what's called the Death flash from Chrysler. Basically ruined the power of the magnums to bandaid the plenum gasket issues. They pulled a ton of timing out of the engine and contributed to the boat anchor reputation these Magnums have today compared to other common swaps. I think you'll be happier with a tune of some type even just to get the engine back to the original power figures. Most tuners won't touch your PCM unless you have done a plenum fix that is more than just a new gasket. If you want the VIN matched, BG is about the only game in town for that. I was not happy with them at all, but I now believe the fuel sync had more to do with my issues than their tune. They were no help in the least with my drivability issues. The several dodge truck forums out there have decent archives on these older engines. People just don't hotrod them much so there is very little out there to help you out.

This is cool - certainly the first time I’m hearing of it in the Magnum world, though admittedly I haven’t kept up with the going-ons there in a few years.

But it makes sense really - I know of a few guys who went with a MegaSquirt controller in the early 10’s trying to get fueling right. With the Holley setup, you know they have well established support and programming guidance. If you can also make it work with the RE, that would have been a game changer 10-15 years ago!

how can a person tell if the PCM has been given the death flash? I just started reading about this the other day.

If it has a sticker on it saying it has a updated flash is one way. Most times from what I understand those updates were the death flash. There use to be some good threads about it on the Dodge forum. The easiest way I know of around it is to get an aftermarket flash from someone like Flyin Ryan or HemiFever.

Here is a good video on how to properly time the magnum V-8 after a rebuild. And he explains fuel sync a little also.

Great video I just learned everything that I did wrong when I rebuilt the magnum in my 97 Ram in 2008. It was all of that.

A while back someone was asking me about how to set the timing and I couldn't think of how to properly explain it and I sure wish I'd known about this video at the time.
Marty is a great guy and has done a TON of testing and design work on the magnum V-8. UTAWsome Performance is his company.

Here is one of the update stickers that many times means it has the death flash. I'll see if I can find the list of death flash updates there use to be a list on one of the Dodge forums.

To test out my PCM and see if it was the reason, I was getting the P0753 fault code I swapped in my spare PCM to see if I still had the fault. And unfortunately, it's still there on the spare PSM also so it's 1) In the transmission 2) Somewhere in the wiring.

So, I'll throw my other PCM back in for now and start taking some voltage reading to see if I can track down where the problem is.

Snowblower shifter linkage is broken 😢 so I know what I'm working on today.

The way you throw money around on stuff…I’d drive to your local Ariens dealer and pick up a new one. I upgraded a couple years ago and it’s so much nicer to just fire up the blower when it snows, vs fucking around with my old stuff when I need it.

Damn I didn't realize I just throw money around must be why I'm broke all the time. Believe me I've been thinking about getting a new one. I'm fed up with this old thing. It's done a good job but I'm ready to not have to work on it all the time.

Here is mine. The remanufactured has me wondering. I could not find a chart to desipher that date code

I can't tell you about the rebuilt ones. I don't know that I've ever heard about them.
