Gear pattern: a different perspective

Working on the Dana 30 this morning. Pinion depth at .065 - preload at 18 inlbs- backlash at .011. Looks to me like the pinion depth is a touch deep.

What does it look like if you tighten up backlash? There seems to be a discrepancy between factory backlash(6-10) and some later literature (10-15) for yukon. What gears?

Revolution gears. They say between 6-10 for gear lash. I can snug up the backlash and see what it looks like.

It could be a little deep. Remember on a low pinion front the coast side of the gear is now the drive side. Having it way off the outside of the ring isn't optimal. I'd be making changes to get that towards the root

Just for heck of it , I got the backlash adjusted to .006. I think it looks a tad better on the drive side.

The issue with decreasing pinion depth is that the smallest shim I have is .010. So that’s what I just removed. That puts the depth at .056 which is the slinger thickness.
These are with the backlash at .008. The pinion preload is at 16. I think I need another .005 deeper on the pinion
