USB power

Keep an eye out for the output amps. 1A is very low for some of the newer devices out there specially tablets.

I would do something like this where both ports are 2.1A

You are absolutely correct. Get 2.1 amp on both ports if possible. It will just charge your phone faster and it will charge your tablet properly. I use 2.1 or 2.4 amp all the time on my phone. My portable device battery comes with 2.1 and 2.4 amp ports for charging on the fly.

Really?! I would not have thought it would kill a vehicle battery..... How did you have it wired? Is there an LED on the receptacle that is always lit? Did you wire this to the "always hot" lead?

Yeah, so I simply cut the wires from the existing cigarette lighter and matched positive to positive and neg to neg. reassembled dash and tested the plug. Went to bed and woke up to a dead battery.

It does have a red LED light that stays illuminated even with the keys out. PO must of re-wired off the always hot lead. Yay me

That LED shouldn’t pull enough current to kill a battery over night. Perhaps there is something else going on there?

Now that I'm running a tablet for navigation, keeping it charged has become a bit of an issue. Here's the solution!

The BANDC PJH-RS-0123 power port. Got one on order from @Chris's favorite online retailer. Two ports, a 1 amp and a 2.1 amp for charging tablets. Less than $10 sans shipping. Has a built in dust cover and a screw back mounting system. It fits where the stock cigar lighter goes, but you do have to trim the hole slightly bigger.

Love that old school look mate.... reminds me of the Hurst Lightning rod shifters in the early 80's...lol
I remember having an old 72 Scout that had the same type of shifters, and of course the old-school CJ's except they had more sticks haha.

I have the 2.1 amp usb on my Harley and it will not maintain my GPS operation so I just installed a 3.1 amp on my Indian, we will see how that works out.

@ac_ Did you replace the ashtray with another bank of switches? If so, were there any modifications needed?
Yes and yes.
I ordered another blank from ebay for like 20 bucks. I had to do some mods, but not hard if you have a dremel.

I did mine kind of like this. On the passenger side, I drilled a hole in the plastic, and slipped in a speed nut then made an aluminum angle and attached it to the modded switch panel so it would screw in on both sides. If I am ever in there I will take a picture of what I am talking about.

See if I can explain that better:
So on the original switch panel you have to cut the part that screws onto the dash and then bolt the new switch panel to the old one. I just bolted some angle on the opposite end of the new panel and attached a speed clip in the dash so it would bolt on both sides of the switch panel. I hope that makes sense. I don't believe they do this in this link. Or maybe they do, I didn't really see this link till after I did mine.

But basically here is a link that does what I did:

Thanks for your help. The ashtray is wasted space on mine too and I wanted to see what others had done to theirs.

If you're charging larger phones or tablets, you may want to look into USB adapters that support Qualcomm's Quick Charge, or USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). These newer specs for USB charging can deliver up to 5A of power, which can quickly charge a larger phone or tablet.

I went the cheap route and just dropped a cheap USB charger with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 into the cigar lighter. It puts out 3.0A on each of two USB ports. That happens to be more than enough for the phone I use for audio and navigation.

If you're using a larger tablet, that extra power on the USB port could come in handy.
