If you could have any secondary vehicle what would you pick?

yeah we are zeroing in on the crosstrek for my son...unfortunately to get the blind spot monitoring in the side mirrors is pushing msrp over 26K....a little more than I was going to spend on my 19 year old. But figure he will probably get 10 years at least out of it.
Yikes... Isn't it cheaper to teach him to look over his shoulder before changing Lanes? :)

Yeah thats what cracks me up, he has none of that in his current highlander and drives fine....the wife is hung on it...might have to work on that. We have been looking at some of the newer subcompact suvs out there and there is very little visibility so you need them. The crosstrac looks to have great visibility so may not need.

This is another one of my pet peeves with modern cars. They forsake visibility for styling. Some might argue that it's for fuel economy, or perhaps rollover protection, but I suspect that the marketing people have a lot to do with it. It's got to be stylish to sell, and the big hiked-up rear quarters and low rooflines seem to be the "in" thing...

100% correct...if you look at almost any modern SUV the windows get smaller going to the rear. Even my 14 explorer, no small vehicle, needs those stupid blind spot mirrors if the rear headrests are up...no visibility. It is another reason I am looking into the crosstrek.

We have a 17' VW Alltrack SE. Looked at all the Subies, and the VW has a much higher fun factor. Check out the Alltrack S. Great visibility!

Thx will take a look...we plan to buy not lease and the VW reliability has really come down (as most of the German cars)....Just today was in the benz dealership with the wife's car, the entire command system (cabin computer with nav, radio and all interior controls) took a dump....
$5000+++ if it was not under warranty.

Yes, I know it's "Apples and Oranges", but it does make a point, does it not? ;)

*Sorry 'bout the "resolution" thing. Didn't realize it would show up.

For me it's the old things. If I could have back my '73 FJ-40, '63 FJ-45 P/U, '43 GPW. Or my Dads, '53 Split Window Bug, '63 & '64 VW Double Cabs, both set up for off-road exploring, or his pride & joy, '53 Mercedes Benz 180 Diesel.
Oh and a previous post mentioned early Broncos, they were produced YM, '66 to '76.

His " '64 Bronco " was likely a typo. ;)
Speaking of Broncos, I've always found it amusing to think that the original International Scout pre-dated the Bronco by some six years. Never understood why they aren't more popular. Far more utilitarian than Ford's horsey box. I've always like the old corn-binders, myself. Owned a few of them in years past...

If you're interested in the Crosstrek, you should consider the new Hyundai Kona. Great reviews! Bought one for my oldest son.

Yep, already looked at it briefly, very nice, better warranty...they are just coming into the dealerships here with the boring colors of black and white and they are sold before they hit the ground. Problem is with the blind spot system the msrp is getting over 24K and they really are not "dealing" on them yet....that why I am looking into the crosstrek as well.

so she has the limited? She like?
Yes, Limited with EyeSight. She loves the eyesight when backing out of the driveway. It actually STOPS the car if a pedestrian in approaching.

Have a buddy with a Lexus with the PreCollision thing. He drives a bit aggressively and when changing lanes as you catch up to another car.... the PreCollision thing will apply the brakes.... slowing you suddenly..... and setting off the BlindSpot thing.... scares the bejesuz out of you.

I went with a Premium with only one option, auto. I weighed getting the 6 speed. I thought it would deter my daughter (13 now) from texting and driving, but she was a little freaked out when I explained a manual transmission.

The prices of Crosstreks cover a huge spread between the base and Limited.
