High Mileage 2001 Sahara Build

Awesome Thread...Now I get it. You started wheeling with your dad when you were what, 10? That's awesome that you've come to a point in your lift to get the Jeep fixed up again. I'd give almost ANYTHING to find the old VW dunebuggy that my dad had during my formative years. It was a real Meyers Manx, Bright orange with aluminum Slot mags and Goodyear Wide ovals in back. It had LOTS of issues with wiring and what not but we had so much fun in that car. He sold it to come up with cash for buying the business he worked at, which worked out really well for him, but we lost track of that car. I've asked him if he remembers who bought it, or if he has any records...he doesn't.

Good Luck! I'm subscribing

Yup, nothing I'm doing would make any sense without the sentimental value that my Jeep has. My Dad was never into 4 wheeling at all. But when I was 9, we went beach driving in Nantucket, MA to go fishing and I was hooked (picture of my Jeep on the same beach in 2016 below). I then convinced my Dad to book the off-roading 101 course at Rausch Creek and I've been into Jeeps and wheeling ever since then. The Jeep is more of a father son project at this point. I'm still a college student so I'm still not in a position to be fixing it myself, but my Dad and I have both decided that we want to get the Jeep fixed up again. Too many memories to let it go or let it sit in the garage.

I just can't see paying 250 but for rear tail lights. Lol

It was hard paying that price, but they are worth it to me, especially considering how tough they are. You can't beat the way they look either.

If I was to see them in person, it could sway my decision. Lol

Hmmmm, I got a shipping notice from Savvy. 3 boxes which makes sense as the tummy tuck is on back order. I ordered a transfer case shifter, body lift, and a motor mount lift in addition to the tummy tuck kit. I'm very confused by the weights of the packages. Out of those three things, what could possibly weigh 35 pounds? Thoughts?

Happy my parts are on the way no matter if they weighed 1000 pounds, but just interested. I didn't think any one of those things was all that heavy....

They all seem way heavier than they should be...

My rockers made it back to Savvy yesterday so they might be shipping to you soon hah. They’re 78 lbs. Also when I bought them they said backorder but shipped next day. I’d guess the main skid is the 35 lbs, and maybe two things together such as cable and MML?

Yeah I'm not sure. The tummy tuck kit comes with a pretty big steel crossmember. I'd imagine that'd weigh more than 35 pounds itself. Not really that concerned. I'm sure Savvy has everything sorted out. Just curious as to what they're shipping me and when (I'm too excited to receive it I guess :b2:)

Found some nice forest green half doors on craigslist around 3:00 PM today. 4 hour round trip drive and they're now mine! Really nice condition and came with uppers. Only thing I want to do is clean up the interior panels. What are some good techniques or products I should use to get some of the dirt off of the inside panels? I'd like to basically restore the insides of the doors. The outside paint is about perfect in terms of matching my deteriorating paint. Basically no rust or major dents anywhere which I'm really happy about.

I'd try some dawn dish soap first. Mix up a solution in a spray bottle...maybe 10 drops of soap to a 20 oz bottle. Spray it on, scrub with a soft bristle brush, like a tooth brush, and then rinse with a microfiber towel and bucket of clean water. After you get that done, go after it with something like armor all (I personally like Meguires Interior detailer as its less glossy)

Well 45 minutes with a sponge and some soapy water did wonders! Pretty much all the dirt is gone. I thought it would be much more difficult to clean. I'll head on over to the local auto parts store tomorrow to get some armor all or something similar.

Super excited about my half doors! I think I'm going to be really excited once my powder coated frame, savvy tummy tuck, savvy rockers, savvy tail lights, and half doors are all installed on my Jeep :D:D

Those look great! Great find! Really like your build thread, I've got a thing for green Saharas. ;)
Half doors are getting crazy expensive lately. I'm lucky I found these ones before the prices went up even more. Still paid more than I wanted to, but for the condition they are in, I'm pretty happy with what I ended up with.

Time flies doesn't it. It has been 2 months since I've updated this thread.

The Jeep has been at the shop for the last week. No idea if they are working on it yet but the frame has been stripped and powdercoated. All of the internal rust is gone and the inside is powdercoated as well. The frame was also diamonded when I picked it up so they straightened it out for me. Not too happy that it wasn't straight but I guess that is my fault for not measuring it accurately enough.

I've added a lot of parts to the list that the Jeep is getting right now. My 33" KM2's have been on the Jeep for 34,000 miles and are starting to wear out. I'm hoping to go to 35's within the next few months so I'm ordering some parts in preparation for that.

Here are the parts that have been delivered to the shop so far:
Savvy Under Armor
Savvy Transfer Case Shifter
Savvy Body Lift
Savvy Motor Mount Lift
JB Conversion SS SYE
Blue Monkey Speedo Healer
Power Steering Cooler
Genuine Grabars

Here are the parts I'm still waiting on:
Savvy Rock Sliders
Savvy Tail Lights
Black Magic 15" Brakes with Unit Bearings (ordered that only a few minutes ago)
Spicer Ball Joints (Also ordered a few minutes ago)

Here are parts I'm anticipating on ordering within the next few months:
35" Maxxis Trepador
Trail Ready Beadlocks (USA Made!)
Currie 4" Springs
Currie Steering
Revolution Front 4340 Big U-joint shafts for Dana 30
Revolution Rear 4340 Shafts for Dana 44

The Jeep is also getting some maintenance while it is in the shop:
Dynamat under the carpet
Engine seals
Freeze Plugs
New Body Mounts
New Motor Mounts
New Brake Lines
Front Differential Yoke and Pinion Seal
Some cosmetic odds and ends.

So that is where the Jeep is today. Hoping to have it back by Christmas but I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't back by then considering how much work there is to do. At this point, the Jeep is basically being restored.

Are they going to take progress photos for you? I asked my shop to do that when they install the Savvy mid-arm, outboard shocks, and RubiCrawler.

They probably will. They post on instagram every once in a while so my Jeep might be on there. I'll ask when I call them on Monday. Have to let them know I ordered ball joints and brakes anyway.

Good deal. Always nice to have photos like that, especially if you ever decided to sell it. It shows the new owner that you really took care of it!

Funny joke!

I coudn't imagine ever selling this thing. It is worth so little money that I'd rather turn it into a bar or a couch before I sold it off to someone else just so they could ruin it. $4k - $5k isn't worth losing the Jeep I grew up with!

I'm also having my old frame cut up so I can make a table. That should be an interesting thread if I ever get time to take on the project. I'm considering some sort of engine block / frame table if my block ever gets ruined... Too many ideas, too little time!
