Hardtop wiring: converting plugs to match different years

Hey sorry to revive an old thread but I just picked up a 97-00 hardtop with the 10 pin connector. I have a 2000 TJ myself. What I need to know is where to find the female tub side connector and wiring and once I do where does it plug into in the dash? Is it on the instrument cluster maybe?

It should be in the back driver side corner of the tub, if not there then it's possible your Jeep wasn't wired for a hardtop from the factory. Mopar used to have a kit available for retrofitting non-hardtop TJs, but Googling it seems to show it has been discontinued. Might have to find one used or end up making a harness.

https://www.quadratec.com/products/11190_48.htm is the kit I'm referring to.

Same here unfortunately. Have an 05 Sport and pre 03 hardtop and just need the elusive hardtop wiring kit that Mopar discontinued that came with wiring, switches, washer bottle and hose for rear window. Striking out on eBay and any other website and junk yards. I’ve called multiple and sent parts requests messages and so on. It’s just not available anywhere. I’ve been hunting for about 3 months.
Has anyone on here ever wired up their own all the way from the dash to the back? Washer isn’t all that important (nice to have but not imperative) but to at least have wired the wiper and defroster to behind the dash with switches? If so, do you have any notes on it to help us unfortunate souls out??

I have a 2006 that I recently wired up the hardtop on. Since the kit doesn’t exist anymore, I had to copy every single wire that went in the kit. Somehow I got it to work the first time.

I bought the following parts:
Wiper and defrost switch and pigtails
03-06 body side hardtop wiring harness
Washer bottle with 2 pumps
Washer fluid check valve for JK hardtops
Generic plastic tubing
12AWG and 18AWG wiring
Used car stereo wiring harnesses (to pull harness pins from)
OE style relay, fuses, and fuse tap

Most of the parts I ordered from Davey’s Jeeps.

I then used the Factory Service Manual to copy every single wire that is related to the hardtop. Not only do you have to run wires back to the top, but you also have to add pins and wires between existing wiring harnesses and run wires into the engine bay for the 2nd washer pump. There are other ways to wire the defrost that are easier; however, in order to get the factory timer function it needs to be wired through the instrument cluster. Finding the right pins to fit in the harnesses can be a pain, but I was able to make it work.

If anyone has questions on this, please feel free to ask.

I am attempting to add the factory hardtop wiring as you did. I would appreciate it if you can email me ([email protected]) with any additional information. Right now I am gathering all the supplies and I hope to start as soon as I have them. Thanks for your help!

I really don't have any significant additional information, but feel free to ask any questions here.

The best resource is the factory service manual, which you can download here:

Essentially, you are trying to duplicate the wiring that Chrysler would have installed in the factory. There is a section full of wiring diagrams. You're looking for the sections on the rear wiper/washer and the heated back light.

The hardest part was probably adding pins to existing wiring harnesses. I tore apart some junkyard harnesses to get usable pins, and just reused those.

It does take a while to install, as you'll need to take off a good amount of dash trim and pull the instrument cluster, as well as run wiring to the engine bay.

Thanks for the reply. I’m just wondering what the best way to connect the positive line for the defogger light switch (that indicates when it is on, not the backlight). The wiring diagram show that it is spliced from the positive line back to the hardtop defogger, then routed through a separate harness (I think 301?) then to the fuse box. I’m thinking it would be best to run a separate wire spliced at the same location to an inline fuse then directly to the defogger switch. If you know of a better or easier way that would be great. Every other line will be run how the factory wiring diagrams are.

That's pretty much what I did. Spliced a smaller wire off of the 12 gauge back to the hardtop, added a 5 amp inline fuse, and ran it through the indicator light.

Hey guys I just got a hardtop for 2003 Jeep Wrangler and I have no factory plug for a hardtop so I bought a wiring harness from 1997 with the plug should everything be the same

Just to be clear.....your TJ is a 2003? If so, I don't think the 1997 harness will work. I think you're going to need a harness (you actually need two harnesses.....body and dash) from a 2003-2006 TJ.

make sure you verify which hardtop you have. If there are vertical vents on the hardtop then you have a 97-02 top. If you have an 03-06 Jeep than you will need an adapter to make that connection.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1851501505...d=link&campid=5337789113&toolid=20001&mkevt=1Confirm which top you have though. The 03-06 hardtop does not have the vents because the tailgate has integrated vents which eliminated the need for the hardtop vents.

Also, forgot to mention….You should update your profile. It helps us help you when we can see what you’re working with.
Welcome to the forum too, it’s a great place to be, so many people are willing to help out and answer questions but practically anything you want to know is on here to find. You’ll learn a ton more searching and reading than just asking for something specific.
Good luck with your project!

Recently in another thread I posted many things I wanted to get rid of as I cleaned out my storage area in preparation for moving (https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/after-15-years-of-design-and-fabrication-time-to-downsize.72585/). It turns out many of the things I wanted to get rid of found a home, so thanks to everyone who found something in that thread that they wanted.

I'm cleaning out the workshop now and came across an unmarked box. I opened it and found these kits that I had completely forgotten.

SafariCabWiringKits.jpg

When I was turning over the Safari Cab hardtop to Gr8Tops, I designed a series of wiring kits that could adapt the hardtop to any Jeep and add extra functions like interior lighting and 12v accessory power. This grid explains:

KitGrid.jpg

I had arranged for an RV wiring company to manufacture the kits and they started on their fixtures for manufacturing. Before they finished the fixtures though, Gr8Tops decided not to offer wiring kits for the Safari Cab (the tub-side kits worked with factory and other hardtops as well), so nothing ever became of the kits and the only prototypes ever made ended up in this unmarked box in my workshop.

BTW the first post in this thread is something I wrote on another forum while I was developing the kits, it was copied here without attribution. I'm not complaining, I wrote it to help the Jeep community, so I'm glad it's been able to help more people by being posted here.

And as for the kits never getting into production, I suppose that's one of the frustrations of being an independent designer :).
