Jeep Wrangler TJ Cooling System Overhaul FAQ

X2 to constant tension clamps being a better solution than common aftermarket worm gear hose clamps that can't adjust their tension for different temperatures or hose shrinkage/expansion.

If the Dorman 620-112 bolts up to the stock fan clutch, which I believe from posts on JF it does, is it an improvement over the stock 5 blade? Are there any negatives to the 9 blade swap?

I don't think there would be a negative to it, but you won't gain anything from it. Trying to make the engine run cooler won't yield any sort of performance gain. Of anything it can actually hurt performance, as the engine ECU is optimized to run in a specific temperature range.

So, I see 5012366AF for my 2004 jeep wrangler 4.0 Liter at amazon is $337.59, but I see a replacement part number of 68382492AA on wermopar.com ($135.72) & tascaparts.com ($134.56). Can someone confirm if this replacement part number of 68382492AA is correct? Also does anyone know what the Mopar part number is to replace the metal heater line (See Below I). Possibly 53007978? 53007978 doesn’t look like below I to me. I appreciate any help!

68382492AA replaces 5012366AF, so you can use either on your 2004.

That Dorman part you linked to above looks like the correct part to me!

Yeah, the dorman part looks correct, but when I look at Mopar 53007978 in the diagram it doesn’t look right. Almost looks small but looking at some other sites. The real/color PIC's look correct. Maybe the Mopar diagram just shows it shorter with the part number 53007978. Mine is badly rusted and I thought I might replace it. I'd like to buy the Mopar one if possible but wasn’t a 100% sure on the part number. I'll try 53007978 and see what I get.

Don't always trust the diagrams either. They are wrong from time-to-time. I'd order it and see what you get.

That one on Amazon is shipped and fulfilled by Amazon, so worst comes to worst, you could easily return it without any hassle (Amazon is amazing for returns).

Is this water pump part number correct? When I look it up on a different website it shows a different Mopar pump that is $160 where the one above is only $50....what I’m getting is Mopar pump 68382489AA....can anyone verify if the one in this write up is okay to get for a 99?

Yes, I'm 110% certain that is the correct water pump part number. See here:

That part number was just superseded with a newer part number, that's all.

I used the link in the original post for the Mopar coolant but after doing a little reading it looks like that Mopar coolant in the link is OAT not HOAT....is that correct? I ask because the write up said get a HOAT

Rather than the Mopar brand, many TJ owners use Valvoline Zerex G-05, a quality HOAT coolant available at nearly every parts store:

I have a 97 4 cylinder, and every part store I've been to has had the wrong numbers for the heater hoses. Got PO'd and just used bulk hoses

Nothing wrong with that. They're just hoses, and they'll get the job done.

One of my clamps broke during my overhaul. Anyone sourced new constant tension clamps? Like, they know what size to grab? Parts manual says 32mm for the lower hose...no flippin way. Looking at that clamptite tool, I might just get that, because by the time I buy all the clamps (they are are corroded) I'll have just as much into the tool as I would the 8 clamps I need.

If anyone finds constant tension clamps in the right size, I too would love to know where to get them and the sizes used!

I have seen multiple part numbers for a radiator for a 1998 SE Auto. Can someone confirm if all these part numbers are interchangable? I just bought this Jeep and it has 122k miles, so I guess I should knock out some preventative maintenance.

On my case, jeep starts to overheat on very steep hill climbing at low speeds, etc. Never on open road, so when i bought it i bought a radiator brand new. Nothing fancy, ebay about 180$, and inmediately replaced fan clutch that was bad.

Two years later, after flushing coolant system about 4 or 5 times with radiator cleaners. I replaced radiator, hoses and put good quality coolant on it. About 250$ in parts, without replacing water pump and thermostat, besides i bought it a year ago too.

Now never hit vertical position on the temp indicator, even going uphill during hours to slow speeds or abusing on summer. Thermostat installed on the car is factory, must be opening at 90degress celsius. Enough for me by now.
