Hi guys, been following this forum for a while and have been looking to purchase a TJ for some time. I have run across one and was wanting to get some feedback. It is a 2002 TJ, 5 speed manual with approximately 19000 miles. I have not seen it up close only in pictures which I have attached. The seller has a pretty high price attached but the jeep looks well taken care of. I would appreciate any feedback you guys could provide. He believes there may be a rear main seal leak.

It looks clean , but it really depends on the price . There are still a lot of nice low mileage TJ's out there , be sure you get what you really want if you are paying top dollar.

I'd be interested in what they are asking for an '02 with 19k miles...

He was asking 18000, but he said he would take 16500. Based on others I have looked at, seems a reasonable price. The Carfax looks good and it’s a 2 owner vehicle. Southern car Florida and Tennessee.
If you want a true experts opinion, go to Off Road Connection in Fultondale, which is right down the street for you and have him look it over. Owner is Keith Baily, he is an old cronny on all the Peterson's Off Road ultimate Adventure.
He played a key role in many aftermarket parts out there on the market including the 4:1 Tcase in the Rubis as well as being a big part of the Toyota FJ 40 redesign/testing. he knows Jeeps. His shop is often featured and used on Motor Trend's DIRT EVERY DAY Show.

It really depends on what you want , but my guess if you want low mileage , pristine and a rust free southern pedigree , you found it.
Telling someone what to buy is a little like telling them who to marry ...may not be a good idea.
The Jeep is obviously street driven , garage kept and adult owned .
The reality is you can't order one , they are hard to find that nice, and if you want it , you need to be prepared to pay . I'd like to see it a little more loaded ..hardtop especially , at that figure .
You will be proud of it if you buy it .
I'm 52, and bought a Rubicon last summer , paid a chunk, and have been all over Alabama and Tennessee with my wife ...we have had a blast .
Hiway 59 to Fort Payne and little river canyon and DeSoto Backcountry is fantastic .

Thanks for opinion, the area up around Desoto is a really nice area. My wife and I used to ride our motorcycles around that area. The only thing I dont know are the forest roads or trails. Any info would be appreciated. Going to look at jeep in the am.
At the state park they will give you a map of all the back country roads , it's mild stuff and won't chew up a nice rig.
Don't try crossing the river if the water is up .

But I can tell you it looks really clean and hardly used , and if you want something nice , you always end up spending a little usually .
Also , you will avoid a false economy, where you pay 12,000 and need tires , a top and so on and and up with 16,000 or so in one that isn't as nice .

Thanks, that's what I thought. Buy something that I don't have to go out and spend a lot of money on right now (other than initial purchase). I can take my time and slowly build to what my needs may be. I will never do any heavy wheeling, just forest or backcountry roads etc. (I say that now).
I was out to buy a jeep like that , the mileage was low , but I missed the fact the lift kit was shot , the tires shot ,the winch rusted , the gearing wrong for the tires , and 7-8000 later I have what I was after .
All's well that ends well, but the better things start , the more fun it really is!
That Jeep will be perfect .
My wife and I have made some fantastic memories this past year , to me , it's more fun than a boat , makes a trip to the convenience store for ice a ball.
It's like a motorcycle almost , the topless freedom , but you can relax a little more .

We enjoyed out motorcycles but sold them last year, we are not getting younger. Hopefully this will be as fun as the bikes. If we buy, maybe this spring we can catch up and ride through Desoto.

I have had 7 . I promise you , you are going to have a blast .
You won't have to do much to that jeep .
I got Bartact Seat covers to save my upholstery , put in a rear back up camera , and soundproofed mine , it has hard doors and the soft top.
You can go topless all day , and put the top up at night and roll the windows up on the doors (no side or back windows in) and drive home in total comfort.
We did 300 miles one day , mentone , DeSoto , all over .
Get that jeep , we will meet sometime , or I will be glad to drive down and show you what I did with mine and what to look for and avoid.
I'm headed out to dinner with my wife for her birthday .
I'm 256-990-4394 , up close to Huntsville .
Texts are great , that will Jeep is going to do everything you want to do just like it is.
Rugged Ridge floor mats are great.

You going to have Keith at ORC look it over? When you roll uo into his parking lot...you'll know you’re in the right place to have a future Jeep purchase inspected.

Hi guys, bought the 2002 TJ. I drove to Tn today and looked it over and test drove it. Mechanically sound and definitely not had any abuse. The rms does have a leak. Should I have this repaired immediately or not. Also has a zipper issue on rear window. Other than that very nice low mileage vehicle. I plan to carry it to Off Road Connection just to have them look it over ( they are just down the road).
