TJ or JK

The JK does look as good as it does in the pictures. The TJ has a few places the clear coat is coming off, 1 rust spot and a few chips that need touching up. Although if I changed both fenders along with painting the front grill and hood then it would look as good as the pictures.
Those are 2 really nice looking Jeeps. Someone definitely took care of that TJ.

That's news...last I read, back in July, you were on the hunt for a TJ...I guess the red X didn't pan out after all...post some pics of your Jeep!

The red one was the cleanest I looked at but it had electrical issues and I was scared of it. It will probably be the one that haunts me.

I didn’t post picture of the JK because I know this is a TJ forum. I still like the TJs and look at every one I pass and one day I may end up with one. But I have to say that this JK is fun to drive.

When I was shopping for a TJ/LJ recently, the local knowledgeable mechancis told me they see TJs regularly with 200k+ on them with minimal issues. It's always cheaper to keep what you have.

If you swap or upgrade the drivetrain and suspension, then a high mileage jeep is not an issue except for wiring and interior. IF you can deal with that, I would stick with the TJ. My wife's old TJ had 213K miles, I found a deal on a salvage 15 JK with 40K miles for $13.8K, a few quick items and she was back on the road with a fairly new jeep that is her daily driver. The only upgrade was getting a set of takeoff Rubi springs and shocks since her rear shocks were crushed...rides like a caddy compared to my YJ and almost double the MPG. But it will not get big tires and has the manual tranny that is having the pop out of gear problem now intermittently. Even if I have to swap the tranny, I am still into it less that what they retail here used...by almost $10K Her TJ was running good but was starting to have a few problems that I just dont have the time or money to deal with, since it was here daily driver, time was of the essence. So I picked my poison and went newer for her. I am upgrading my YJ to an LJ, just because I am getting older and want a nicer ride because my back and spine is not getting any better and the extra wheel base will be nice for camping gear. Well that is my current logic. Tim

I personally think you can't lose either way. TJs are by far the coolest looking Jeeps, simple to work on, and modify. JKs, on the other hand, are far more comfortable and quiet on the highway, and just as capable, if not more, in stock form off road, while not having quite so many electronic nannies as the JL. Plus, a JK can run 33s with minimal lift. I'd have both if I could.

One of the first mods I did to the 2012 JK Sport I had prior to the TJR was cut the ends off that monstrous bumper, and add new end caps. Looked much better.

I want to thank everyone for their help. I'm new to the whole Jeep experience. A year ago I never thought I'd ever want a Jeep. Bought the JK because my son has always loved the look of a Jeep. Well he didn't like driving a stick so I had to drive it for a little while and found that I love it! Bought the TJ because it's an automatic and after driving it a few times he didn't think it was as special as he had always thought it would be. So now I have 2 Jeeps. I have enjoyed both of them and have learned a lot by having 2 different Jeeps. The 2 biggest shortcomings for me is room and ride. Having 2 different Jeeps that are setup differently has let me experience some of the different factors that affect the ride. I know that it's possible to get a ride that will be more then acceptable for me. Until recently I thought the only option for more room was an unlimited 4dr Jeep and I don't like the look of the 4dr. I didn't know there was a 2dr unlimited, like I said, I'm new to Jeep.

I'm hoping to sell both the JK and the TJ because for the long term I believe the LJ will be a better fit for me. I also like the look of a raised LJ.

Since you guys have a lot more experience then me could you please give me some honest feedback on what you think each one of my Jeeps is worth? I want to get a fair price for them but also don't want it to take 6 months to sell.

The TJ does have some clear coat coming off that you can't see in the pictures. It also might still have an oil leak.

2012 JK
2005 TJ

Use NADA or KBB website, dont trade them it, they only give you 30-50% of what they are worth. The websites use your zip code to help with value.

Lifted LJ is a good choice. You’ll love it. The hunt is on haha

I was actually looking for a CJ6 when I first learned that the LJ even existed. They share the same wheelbase. But finding a stockish 6 within driving distance to inspect just wasn't happening. I started looking at LJs and it wasn't until mine popped up on the "radar" about an hour and a half drive away from here up in Kentucky. I'm more than happy with my LJ

In my opinion an extended 2 door JL would likely vastly outsell the new Wrangler pick up , which I think is going to be an over rated flop ....it's both a messed up jeep and a messed up truck .

I know a lot of folks like the new Wrangler pickup, but I expect it to sell at a premium.

The novelty of it amuses everyone but when it comes down to the reality few people are going to sign up.

Just ran across a very clean 2006 LJ with 93k for about $11k. Comes oh so close to what I want. It’s not an automatic and it’s yellow.

both of those would kill it for me, need an auto and nothing against yellow, but I have had my yellow 81 corvette for 20 years so no more yellow.

$11K is what the dealer was asking for mine. I decided I could live with a manual and drove off in it for just under 10K.

I owned a 2005 TJ for less than a year then traded it for a 2012 JK (brand new, 2-dr, Sport, manual) then bought my wife a 2000 TJ two and a half years ago then sold the JK a little over a year ago after owning and driving it for five straight years every darn day and putting nearly 110,000 miles on it.

I kept the TJ and sold the JK. I had sold a TJ to get a JK and immediately regretted it. To me the TJ is always superior in every way.

Now I didn't waste my time, I spent at least $8,000 on that JK. I had a 2.5" lift, 35" mud tires all around, reinforced tailgate, JW Speaker lights, a winch, after market bumpers, a tuner, 5.13 gears, controls arms, track bar, a hard top, a soft top, etc. I took it out and played with it when I could and like I said, it was my DD.

My TJ? It was pretty much stock, the PO took good care of it, didn't really do anything to it, put only 5,000 miles a year on it. I couldn't be happier to be back in a TJ even though I've only done minor things to it and only finally just put a 2.5" OME HD lift on it.

That's me though, everyone is different, but for a tl;dr I am happier back in a TJ, even a relatively stock one, over my JK I had modified quite extensively. I won't ever get rid of the TJ at this point, if the engine craps out I will replace it or anything else I need to in order to hang on to it.
