So heres the start of the tj build i have so far theres nothing big just cosmetic with a little function. This is a practically stock 98 sport with just under 100k miles running 30” allterrains and no lift. It was bought last year and so for all thats been done is blacked it out instead of chrome.
Heres how it was when i bought it versus now:

Just wait... in a year this thing will be stretched with 37s and one ton axles!

Kidding of course! Just do yourself a favor and don’t follow my build thread!

Seriously though, this is a great place to start from. I think red is hands down my favorite Jeep color.

RED is definitely my favorite color. I like the KC lights on the front bumper. It really works with your rig. One of the first things I did was black out the headlight trim. :)

Im glad i found the red one blacked out red is my favorite combo the previous owners were awesome too everything messed up with it they replaced. Shocks were leaking. Bam brand new ranchos. They also replaced fuses that were out of whack which Id expect many if not all others have experienced atleast within the electrical department.

So what do you think you are planning for it?

I don’t really know yet. I haven’t even take it out to more than a dirt road in the neighborhood. For now i dont want to do anything that could affect the ride like a lift im very pleased with it for my basic commute. Side note do any of you guys have the machinegunny sound when you over steer to one side. Mine seems to get mad at me like that if I turn it that much.

Likely the tire is rubbing the sway bar (I think?). A washer on the steering stop with fix that very easily.

What size tires are they?

Probably rubbing your lower control arm. A washer or two on the steering stop should do it.

Ride is not affected by lift, but by poor shocks and gearing

Thanks for the help! I will look into and they are 30s. Does anyone know why goodrich uses inches for tire width?

Huh. I don't see why 30s would rub. That's essentially stock size. 10.50 width can be run on stock wheels and barely rub. I'm guessing the they are 30x9.5x15?

Your 98 is nearly identical to my 02. My Jeep is mainly a sunny day toy, but this site is invaluable to learning about them and also has really good modification ideas and links. I just did the interior LED upgrade and headlight upgrade using all the great info available here

That would be correct i was thinking of getting 10.5s at somepoint because doing the math to mm 9.5s just are skinny to me. Its like 240 compared to 265

To be honest, I know nothing about metric tire sizes. If you went to a 10.50 wide you would likely go to a 31 inch tire. What transmission and axle gearing do you have?

You are in a good place to start! Low mileage, clean, stock, you can build how you want and not have to worry about someone else's mess.

I agree on the sound potentially being a ujoint. Hopefully the repair is easier than mine:rolleyes:

Everyone knows red is the best color

Very sadly this ones an auto three speed. Its stock sport diff which is the 30? Tires will be far in the future these still had the hair things on them when I bought it. Oh and the spare is the twenty year old 28” any say on how you guys use your spare and if its needed to change to the goodrich ones installed.

Nice TJ +1 for the red. I am sure @lowranger will find this thread and congratulate you on your choice of color too soon.

I bought my Jeep stock also, and blacked mine out first mod too. Looks a lot better in my opinion. I am excited to see where you go with your build.
