Reproducing the OR-Fab Tire Carrier (anyone got a OR-Fab carrier?)

Oh absolutely. I honest to god waited to order an Exogate until I couldn't put it off any longer in hopes the OR-FAB carrier would be back as an option. When he told me the timeframe I think he could see the utter disgust mixed with disappointment on my face. He then offered me a DV8 t-shirt as a consolation prize which I promptly took so I could wipe the tears from my eyes and blow my nose with it......

I’ll buy your exogate :D lol

How much do you want for the exogate:)

Hah, you guys don't waste any time! I'm actually really happy with the Exogate as it holds my spare very close to the body and flat out works. Will I get an OR-FAB carrier if they come out? Maybe, but it'd be hard for me to come up with a reason not to purchase this Exogate again.

The only reason I needed either was that I'm running the rear Mopar Rock Crawler bumper which calls for a body mounted spare.

Agreed, my Jeep right now has one and I plan on having one on my future LJ.

From what he told me, the guys at OR-Fab were simply selling themselves short. They were building exceptionally well made products, but not making enough profit margin to pay the overhead and stay afloat. They liked to "party on weekends" (and by that I mean go out and do some serious 4x4'ing) and weren't focused enough on running the business side of it or putting some of the profits back into business.

They decided to shut down and then got purchased by another company (I believe it was Trans-American he said) with the intention of outsourcing the OR-Fab products to China. Apparently China couldn't even figure out how to use a ruler (his words), and the test products they were turning out didn't fit worth a damn, so ultimately they scrapped the idea and just shut OR-Fab down altogether.

He told me that he happens to have a lot of OR-Fab parts, but they're all JK parts, or front bumpers, the one piece he can't find is the rear tire carrier, which he needs in order to reproduce the rear.

Now I'm kicking myself as there was an OR-FAB TJ tire-carrier for sale on CL here in Orange County about a month ago. The seller didn't know what it was and wanted $150 for it. He said it was available that night. I didn't drive out since it was raining and it was sold the next day. I am currently running one that had to be re-welded in several places and gussets installed as it had failed. Wishing now that I would have made the drive. I could use a spare or could have lent it to them...

I’m pretty sure the guy who was supposed to bring these back into production just ditched the idea altogether. I never heard back from him and it’s been a long, long time.

I guess it just goes to show that most people like to talk the talk unfortunately.

Not sure if this is one or not. Mine has re inforced metal brackets bolted inside the tail gate..

This is what I found:
https://orfab.com/pages/about-us

Looks like Or-Fab is back and moved from Arizona to Riverside California, don't know why anyone would want to start up or move a business into one of the highest tax states in the union but OK! then......

The number on their website: 951-680-9595

They only seem to have bumpers, rock rails or sliders and the tire carriers for sale at this point on the site.

Yes that's the Holy Grail, you have the awesome pretty much bulletproof OR-Fab carrier.

It looks to be official now, they are back in production. Just the model that carries the jerry cans, the lower profile model without the ability to carry jerry cans is not available. https://www.extremeterrain.com/orfab-tubular-tire-carrier-9706-tj.html

This is good news. If the non-Jerry can version comes back I'll need to give some serious thought to getting rid of my current carrier.

Yeah I'm lucky that's what I have, that's definitely preferable to the jerry can version that sticks out so far. When I ran the jerry can version I had to remove my spare for some crazy-hard terrain trails so it wouldn't drag on the terrain. Fortunately I was able to buy the non-jerry can version swing-out part and replace it. Even more fortunately the non-jerry can version was still available when I bought my present TJ.

They don't have prints? Gosh, I read these stories about Rokman, and now this...A guy with a decent head on his shoulders about business should be able to make money. Go out and buy some designs from these Defunct companies, and start making parts...Wonder what the market really is....
Rokmen is still in business but mostly producing parts for others. I was in the shop a few months back.

With some basic welding skills, it would be pretty easy to turn the Jerry can version into a non-Jerry can version.

I sent an email regarding the non-Jerry can version last Sunday but have not received a reply.

The only review is not stellar.

That's because the guy is complaining that the swing arm sags below the latch. He apparently didn't bother to read the part of the instruction manual that specifically tells you how to solve that problem, or he read it and was too lazy to act.

I own the OR-Fab tire carrier and can vouch. It's not a device you bolt on and are immediately ready to hit the trails. There are several adjustments you need to make during the install process in order to ensure it works properly, and that means tightening and loosening bolts and nuts a number of times.

I just bought my Jeep and it came with this carrier. Mine sags as well. Can you point me to the instructions so I can adjust it?? Much appreciated.. RR

Doesn't look like the instructions are available online that I can see (not even at the link provided to the product above).

It's been a couple years since I installed mine. If I remember correctly, you basically have to loosen the bolts on the hinge-side of the carrier, lift the arm up, tighten the bolts back down, and check the contact between the arm and the latch. Repeat until you get the arm and latch to meet while under whatever load you're planning to carry.

Adjusting the arm without the tire or jerry cans does you no good, because the arm will sag the second you put any kind of weight on it and immediately throw off your work.

I have a 33x12.50 Duratrac spare tire and two jerry cans on my carrier. I was able to adjust it so that the arm meets the latch pretty much spot-on.
