Because:
1. The radiator takes a beating.

2.The plastic inserts protect from the big stuff.

Once I figured out the up end it was easy.

Looks great!
But what is the equivalent for the TJ/LJ grill?

Not a clue, Robin.
Amazon will have the inserts and the seller will ask which model Jeep. I think I paid $18 because the cheaper ones looked cheap. But you can spend up to $50.
What worked perfectly on my Tundra was the steel mesh used for the base for plastering. Pretty sure I found it laying at a job-site.

I might be in the minority here, but I absolutely can't stand those grill trim pieces. I think I hate them about as much as angry bird grilles and light bars

Just my unsolicited opinion of course ;)

I dont think they're up there with angry eye grilles but they're definitely not my style, blacks not too bad but the chrome ones... yeah nah.

I guess I look at them like face piercings. Something that can go there, shouldn't necessarily go there ;)

You're right though, not as bad as angry bird grilles. Those are just the worst thing to ever happen to Jeeps in general.

I've seen posts where people agree and are removing the Angry Grills.

I'm all for function over form, and paying less for it is good. But I wanted to just get it over with and bought the inserts.

What’s the opinions on this contributing to overheating? One of the Amazon reviews mentioned it.

Arizona has lots and lots of little rocks. And Lots of those rocks, like the one rocketing off a dump truck tire that cracked my new windshield, if they hit just right, can puncture a radiator.

Picture #3 had me chuckling. It hints of an Alfa Romeo or BMW grill with just the center one installed! ;)
