Roof Top Tents

Great looking trailer. I traded the space for open sleeping bags for an additional 2 inch memory foam mattress, Now with the memory foam mattress and the stock mattress I cannot store sleeping bags. I do have a cloth painters mat covering the mattresses though. It is thin and I keep it in when I sleep as a barrier to keep my mattresses clean. I have to haul my sleeping back in the Jeep but it is a small price to pay for comfort for these old bones.

I can't wait to see your set up, but the trailer is awesome especially hooked up to the Jeep. Mine is functional and will carry my quad, but looks like something old Sanford would own. I play the Sanford and Son theme every time I hook mine up lol
We just did the same thing today "ac"..... added a 2" memory foam mattress on the stock mattress. Feels much better. :)

Ya once you get passed the smell it is amazing. It is more comfortable than the bed in my big trailer. haha. It will fit folded up with the regular mattress, and foam mattress plus I keep a painters mat over the top to protect it, but that is it. I don't keep sleeping bags or bedding. It pretty much fills the extra space, but it is way worth it.

We had a cover that we slid the memory foam pad into. Folded the tent up and put the cover on. The two shocks that hold the top of my trailer open for loading and unloading are strong enough to hold it open with the RTT on it. :)

Hate to state the obvious......but wont you fall out like that ?? hehe ;)

We would.....but I think I'll sleep in the tent with the trailer lid closed.......what do you think? good idea?
Great idea....your smarter than the average bear boo boo lol
I thought the trailer might have been the basement or a wine cellar :borra2:

So I've been camping a few times in it in varying weather conditions. Here's my take:

It's a smittybilt product so I was hesitant on buying it, but after camping in it a few times, I've laid my worries to rest. I also bought the annex to go with it. The base is 3/4 treated plywood wrapped in fiber reinforced plastic. The canvas type material is thicker than traditional tents and holds heat well. (Not cavas like the kodiak tents though)

RTT Pros:

cheaper than most others
ease of deployment
included LED lighting for the inside
grab handles for easy entering
It holds up flawlessly in rain
It holds heat very well (had ice building up on it one night. with the proper sleeping bag, I was very toasty)
It's price point is very competitive compared to the others in its class
You'll be the talk of the campground if you live in an area not accustomed to these style set ups

Annex Pros:

It's BIG. I could fit a queen size air up in the bottom
back entry to access your vehicle
plenty of windows
easy to install
privacy when needed
the hold down straps are big enough to wrap around rocks or whatever if your camping somewhere thats hardpan

RTT cons:

It takes a while to dry off when it gets wet, if you're not in direct sunlight
The fastening hardware leaves a little to be desired
It's noisy in high winds
The mattress is hard to get out when your cleaning it

Annex cons:

It's designed to have the RTT ladder on the inside (That's just ridiculous. I modified mine to allow the ladder on the outside)
No bottom. No big deal, I use a tarp
It's thinner than the RTT material
Zippers have slack making it a pain in the a$$ to zip up in the dark
It doesn't do as well as the RTT in wind (even after its staked down)

All in all, I'm super happy with it. I initially bought it to top off a trailer, and still will once I'm done, but using it on top of the TJ is no problem. The kids LOVE the fact that they're sleeping on top of the jeep and it gets the wife out who is against any kind of tent camping that involes the ground (and snakes or bugs) I told her they cant climb ladders, so she's good now.

I would buy it again if I had to do it over again.

Hey Shwane,

Thanks for the great review of your RTT!
I hope you can answer a couple of quick questions for me.

Are you still using your RTT and how has it held up since your OP?
Do you notice the additional weight on the TJ?
I'm considering converting a small utility trailer to tow long distance would the RTT work on a flat top surface on the trailer?

Thanks!

I know the questions wasn't directed to me, but we have close to the same thing. He does have a little bigger trailer though.

I think I posted this earlier in this thread, but as a recap here is mine. I still use it a lot. I absolutely love it, and I bought it, so I could tow it with my Jeep and haul my quad. I have had it for well over a year. I can take more pics if you like. I call it my Jed Clampet!

The tent trailer is bolted to a couple of rails that are u-bolted to the top beams. I have also wired lights on the trailer. I have LED on the roof and floods for loading and unloading in the dark.

I can tell it is back there, and it doesn't have trailer brakes, but it tows nicely with no issues. BTW it is a 4x8 landscaping trailer in its early days.
