Is this normal? Jeep still runs after pulling key out of ignition

I'll add my jeep to the list. My older key will come out if pulled on. A few years back I lost the key and had a new one cut by a mobile key smith and that one stays in. I still use the older key since the key being able to come out has been helpful more then once.
 
Not sure if it is normal, but my Jeep still runs after pulling the key out of the ignition. My current keys are copies since the previous owners (2) had lost the OEM keys throughout the years. I can't say if an OEM one would be easily removed. For me, my keys have never fallen out while driving/off roading. Side note: I also have a 96 F250 that the OEM key can be removed from the ignition and keeps running. Perhaps others can chime in?
 
Mine does the same thing and it is nice to be able to unlock the tailgate, house door and other without shutting off the jeep. Although one time i drove about 4 miles to a friend's house only to realize I left my keys on the kitchen counter.🤣

But you can use anything to turn off Jeep. Just something flat preferably and not jam it in there and as long as you don’t lock the ignition with the lil PIA push button you can use same object to restart it. (y)

My 01 does this also. I also have the inverse problem now. Sometimes, the key won't turn the ignition and I have to keep trying and wiggling it around to work. Will have to try the spare key to see if it is a key or ignition issue. Could be something with the key release button also.

Probably just the ignition cylinder. You can replace them for about $40, set the pins for your key and good to go

I had the same thing with my TJ when I first bought it. Then I realized not only could I remove the key from the ignition while it was running, I could also start it with a screwdriver or anything else that fit in the tumbler lol
 
Reviving an old thread instead of making a new one :) — My 02' has this issue. I'd like to swap the ignition cylinder, do I need to order a specific part if I have SKIM keys?
