I’m new to the forum but not new to Jeeps I owned a 1974 CJ5 for about 7 years . I tinkered on it here and there and had a lot of fun with it exploring the sierras and daily driving it to and from work when it wasn’t raining too bad
But as the family grew I knew I needed something that was safer for the kids and was a little easier to drive . I sold the CJ and pretty much regretted it 30 seconds after, but found a good Deal on a 1998 TJ that had a lot of stuff done to it already.
Here is the night I picked it up
I was really happy with the deal I got on it and it was really clean and had just hit 100000 miles
I drove it about a month used it to tow the dirt bikes to Carnegie and bounced around at there 4x4 course
After driving it around I realized the stock 3.07 gears and 33’s were not cutting it so I started looking around for Dana 44s to regear , I struck out with finding anything reasonable so I decided to regear and install Detroit true tracs front and rear so I pulled the axles to have them regeared
While everything was apart I came into a set 35/1250R15 General m/t ‘s so I sold the BFG’s and bought 4340 shafts for the Dana 35 , I know I’m playing with fire but with a light foot and the true tracs hopefully they last till I can find a affordable 44 to rebuild
So that’s where I’m at now 3.5 RE short arm lift metal cloak fenders and sliders, 4.88 , true tracks and 35s
