New to Jeeps: Looking for opinion on 4 cylinder models

Well, they are noticeably slower than the 4.0, and they need really steep gears if you plan on a lift and bigger tires to make power and be able to maintain highway speeds.

I've only driven one, I've never owned one. The one I did drive was geared really low, like 5.13 and it felt OK in city driving.

Seems with all the 6 cylinders available why? Never heard of anyone motor swapping a 6 for a 4, but tons of threads of wanting to go from 4 to 6.

The 4 cylinders should be cheaper. If you goal is to have a daily driver it should be OK as long as you're not going too far to begin with or even less far on a freeway. Of course there are a couple people out there, somewhere, that wouldn't see a potential problem with that.

And watch out for rust inside the frame or between the frame and skid plate. It can be pretty bad there but not quite noticeable.

I'm not sure how this Jeep went from bad to worse at the same time. Every one I've seen is pretty consistent the whole way. The lightest yellow area is pretty bad, the rest should be avoided. And that isn't a shadow below the red line.

It will be a daily driver but want to build a mild trail rig

Thanks

Thanks for the input. I'm looking for a daily but want to build a mild trail rig to take out on the weekends and for camping. I'm having a hard time finding a 4.0 that is in good shape in my price range

Be patient and find a 4.0!
My daughter's jeep is the 4 cyl. and it sucks on hills and such. Just not enough power. As already stated, if you plan to go with bigger tires at some point you will need a re-gear, so might as well save that money and get a 6 cyl. in the first place.

Yeah the more and more I'm reading and listening to everyone, I'm thinking the same thing.

Get the 4.0L 6cyl. They don’t call it the iron duke for nothing. Be patient. The right deal will come along. I passed on a bunch of 4cyl models before finding my 00 TJ. What is your budget, maybe we could help find you one?

I had one, 2.4l with 6 spd. I wasn't engine focused when looking since it was to be a hunting/trail rig. I was also only running 31's but, I did install 4.88's as even with 31's I found power lacking. After that it had no issues pulling hills even with the 4 of us and a hitch rack of gear. Mileage was a solid 19 hwy, 16 while trailing around. With all that said, would I buy another 4 cyl? No. And not solely because of the lack of power but, for the fact that the 4 cyl (2.4 in particular) was lacking in aftermarket parts like skids, tucks, etc. So my recommendation; wait until you find what you like with the 4.0.

It’s really , why buy an underpowered 4 cyl, when you can have an underpowered 6 cyl.

You can get an SE cheap, and deals can be had on 6 bangers as well. If you look southward , you can find a good one. . I recently paid 9300 for an 06 Rubicon Auto with a good winch , beadlocks and 4” zone lift, 80,000 miles .

Don’t let anyone tell you a 6 cyl automatic (note 6 cyl not 4) isn’t fun or right for a Jeep either ....man it’s ball...stomp and go.
