Questions about stretching the frame on a TJ

@toximus, can you let me know that hole size in those GR BL brackets, plz. i have a whole stack of blanks i need to put a hole in and form.

Same as stock if you have one to measure?

yah, i have several attached to the rig. i could go shovel a hole in the snow and pull 1. from your previous post, i thought you might have some awaiting install that might be close at hand.

If you get very enthusiastic, you can do this. Look at the height of the filler neck.

To show how impressive this is, here is a normally raised Savvy skid, which is already 1.75" higher than stock.

It looks like Blaine stuffed that tank another 3" by raising the floor of the tub!

yah there's about 1" (maybe more for yall with 1.25" BL's) above that pump now and his 2" false floor covered the rest.

looks good too, nice well made cover. the shiney new bolt heads in the filler neck pic gave it away.

Just for clarification. Maybe I’m reading into it too much. Are we referring to a “wheelbase stretch” or are you really referring to cutting and stretching a frame?

***EDIT*** just re-read your first post. Yes you are talking about a frame stretch. Too keep it in laymen’s term, because that’s what I am, that seems like a lot of work, tedious work, and expensive if not doing it yourself.

And, as you can tell, there is a heavy Savvy bias here. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but there are other suspensions out there that work.

Many people on this side of the country, and all over really, run Clayton suspensions and are very happy with the quality, geometry and operation.

Thanks for your response. Like you I am from the Northeast and its soo much different than the Southwest when it comes to wheeling. I see that Savvy is really popular on here along with a few other upgrade options. Which I am not knocking everyone has their preference.
Anyhow I was actually looking to do both... a long arm and a frame stretch. But since decided to just go with a long arm only. If I really want a LJ I'll just to get one and not build one from something that its not an LJ

A good question is how often do you get hung up on the GTS? I tend to find that it'll make an annoying thud but slides right off compared to a diff or something that'll get caught.

yes the top would bolt up+

You get to 101"ish by pushing the front axle out until the pitman arm and track bar almost touch and then extending the rear frame arch back 6". It's a ton of work. More than that to reach LJ 103" is doable. But you are losing room for the outboard shocks or coilovers to live within the body (which I trust is part of the larger project). And you are long past needing to move the gas tank elsewhere.

Never mind that 103" wheelbase is 37" tire territory. Which means not factory axles.

But none of this has any effect on fitting a TJ hardtop onto a TJ because you aren't chopping up that part of the tub. All year's tops fit all year's bodies.

Know this is a old thread but can you stretch a 2000 tj to the wheel base of a lj and would a 2004 hard top be put on without mods?

Pretty darn close and no mods to the tub rail would prevent the use of a hard top. It would require some fairly custom work and be easier with either centered on tube front springs or an alternate suspension. But you can get right at 104 with 37's and slightly more with 35's if you want to keep it inside the rear tail light panel.

Do you by chance mean doing a TJ-6 stretch and then using a hard top from 2004 LJ?

If that is the case, then yes - with a good bit of work (where is that understatement emoji?)

🙂

I think he’s saying he only wants to stretch wheelbase and also asking if a 2004 top would work on a 2000 TJ.
