What are your favorite interior upgrades / mods?

I'm curious about the double DIN radio installations--looking at my 2006 dash it doesn't look like there is space for a double DIN unit. Is there a custom dash piece that makes space? Where are you getting the piece?
Yes, look at Crutchfield you can buy the stereo and then add in the kit with everything you need.

Amazon also sells the double din bezels. Metra is the manufacturer.

Its a replacement dash escutcheon made by "Metra". Amazon has the best price, but Crutchfield carries it also. It works well - although if you want to install two single DIN units like I did, its not straightforward and takes some finagling.

Yes, you need a double DIN center dash bezel cut out a center dash support in order to install a double din.

In my opinion, the double DIN dash bezel does not compliment the factory interior on the TJ’s/LJ’s. Looks cheap as far fit, finish, and quality.

While I will admit my double DIN looks a little techie for a TJ I feel that the bezel is well made and fits right in.

thanks. The existing dash piece already feels a bit...plasticy, so I don't mind replacing it to gain some more space. The biggest issue is just that there is a lack of space in the Jeep's dash to place stuff.

I'm also trying to figure how/where to mount my 2m/70cm ham radio. Its a larger, 2 pice unit (Yaesu FTM-400DR) so I'd rather not try to hang it above the windshield. Part of the reason for looking at double DIN is it can handle maps giving me more possible space to mount the Yaesu screen.

I've been thrilled with:

Joying 8.8" Single-DIN head unit floating bezel with CarPlay & Kicker CS speakers/Select Increment Dash Pods

For those that want a new head unit and don't want to swap in the Double-DIN bezel, I can't recommend it enough. It looks like it was made for the TJ, fitting cleanly between the vents and HVAC controls. I looked into other options but the non-widescreen aspect ratios on them didn't play nicely with the vents.

And while the Joying has its quirks (Chinese manufacturer, CarPlay implementation on Android-based HU), at < $400, it's a great deal.

Heated seats - $50 kit from Amazon and about an hour install.

It’s not cheap, but have you considered a floating screen? Alpine makes a very nice head unit that utilizes a single DIN head unit matched with a 9” inch touch screen. The touch screen can be mounted in many different vertical positions so that it’s more accommodating for your dash setup preference. Im lean

Floating head units are where it’s at for the TJ/LJ IMO.

interesting, I've never seen floating screen stereos. That Joying looks to have the benefit of being narrow enough to fit between the climate controls and the fan registers, though I've never heard of the brand. An interesting thing if you go to the Joying site, is you can get it with an OBDII reader. Presumably I could hook that up and use the stereo to read codes. It also supports a backup camera (I still have never owned a car with one of those...) Finally, being android, Instead of relying on whatever junky nav app they provide, I assume I could download Gaia GPS or similar, as long as I can download maps over wifi while parked at home.

Here is the Joying unit posted above:

This has wireless apple car play?!

Mine does.
Damn I was thinking I might have gone that way but now that I see this I am really thinking about it. Wireless is pretty expensive everywhere else. Does that connect via wifi or BT? I really like my Sony but never use CarPlay because I often dont want to plug in the phone.

It might use a BT handshake and then connects via wi-fi like AirPlay, but I don't know. I know BT needed to be turned on when setting it up, but it doesn't show as an active BT connection when in use. And when I was trying to troubleshoot my OBDII reader, I tried turning off wi-fi and it warned me it was going to disconnect CarPlay.

Wireless CarPlay is the real deal. I put a new Pioneer HU in my JK a while back, the AVH-4400 NEX was one of only a couple HUs that even had that feature. The guy at the stereo store tried to talk me out of it, saying it was laggy, etc, but I couldn't be happier. The joy of having maps & Spotify fire up w/o needing to plug in a wire (which also slows charging I'm told) is immeasurable. And hands free texting has encouraged me to be a lot safer on the roads as well. As far as BT/WiFi, my CarPlay seems to connect on both simultaneously. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very interested in that Joying unit...

Now who has the writeup for fitting a JK steering wheel onto a TJ to gain the steering wheel controls for stereo & cruise control?

I asked about wifi vs BT for wireless CarPlay because its my understanding it uses wifi and that is why the few stereos that have wireless are so expensive. The price of my double DIN bezel and Sony stereo are pretty much the same as the Joying unit linked above. Obviously made in China but they all are so....

So are the parts at Autozone and the Mopar dealer. But good luck with an Autozone TPS sensor....Pick up the made in China Mopar sensor and it will work every time flawlessly.
