For those of you who are forced to run a cold air intake, what filter do you use?

If you can find an air box for cheap I think it’s a way better option than cutting up and siliconing a wind star intake together.

I run a K&N, came with the jeep. kinda want to go back to stock but it hasn't killed the engine yet. @Chris if you still have your stock box, I'd be willing to trade you. ( I have an 01 so no MAF port)

Mine didn't come with a stock airbox unfortunately as the GenRight fenders were already installed. I don't blame you though, given the choice (if I could fit it), I too would go back to the stock airbox. I like @Lou's setup the best so far.

yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to go to the junkyard sometime and pull a Windstar intake for the cowl, seems like the best option.

Could look into the cowl snorkel, and put on a cyclonic dust pre-filter, may even stay below the windshield if careful with ordering parts.

The sensor in the later intakes was indeed the intake air temp sensor. TJ's have never had a MAF.

I run a Windstar cowl intake with a paper filter.
did they move the sensor and the 01's have them somewhere else? my PCM feeds me an intake air temp, but there's no sensor on my intake tube

Don't mean to challenge whether or not your right, just trying to learn more about my Jeep.

also, what do you think of the Windstar, pro's, con's? It's on my list as my next mod.

It’s on the intake manifold.

Yup, earlier ones are on the intake manifold. It's more prone to heat soak. Just swapping it though isn't necessarily the best idea since I'm sure the factory tuned for either location.

Windstar intake allows you to route the actual intake opening much more easily while retaining the factory style filter. Mine is chopped up and modified for much more flow, and I routed it into the cowl to keep it away from water and the engine heat. For mer herse-pers.

my K&N as an annoying whistle at part throttle, still there on the Windstar? I'm getting used to it slowly, but I would rather not have to.

The whistle is coming from the throttle body or how it mounts to the intake. Routing the intake into the cowl will dramatically amplify any intake noises you are hearing. You'll get some new ones too.

Wait, are you talking about a K&N panel filter or the entire tube with conical filter? Maybe you said already, sorry. Drinking, grilling dinner, drinking, and typing all at the same time. And drinking.

Have you passed a SMOG inspection with that set-up?
I did. STAR station guy questioned it but I just said it was the oem box with the bellows removed since my fenders didn’t allow the box to mount to the fender anymore. He stared at it and said ok.

funny part was he didn’t question the magnaflow cat that is carb legal but not for my model year.
