Have you ever added up how much money you’ve put into your TJ?

I got a steal on Heep and got it slightly banged up for $800 in February. Since then I have put over $9 grand in it with lockers, gears, super 35 kit, trail armor, recovery gear, onboard air, shocks, wheels, tires, brakes, lights, control arms etc etc. It is kinda shocking when you go back and look at it all but I wouldn't do anything different.

I have a spreadsheet with a running tally on parts (excluding normal wear parts) bought as well as parts I sold on ebay, craigslist, marketplace etc. to offset cost of upgrades. This spreadsheet has been ongoing since 2002. I did have tires in there a few times a few times so my numbers are a bit skewed since they should fall under normal wear parts. Total without cost of Jeep is $38,000.00. At first I thought that was high but after considering 18 years and many changes in ideas, iterations of the Jeep and complete upgrades (new frame, new motor, new T-case, new axles assemblies, etc.), it comes out to approximately $2,100.00 per year or $175.00 a month. Yeah, I guess I have a habit.

Actually cheap for a car payment! Course most folks would have a car paid off several times since 2002, but I won't even bring that up!!

Haven't had mine very long so I have a good idea.

Certainly more than it's worth, but they hold their base value very well so it's not too bad. For well maintained examples I think the value is only going up from here.

You have in the money pit we call the Jeep? The wife says the cost of buying my 2004 (About 3k with taxes) plus all the stuff I've bought plus the new paint job its almost 9k.
Right off the bat...I'm going to tell you my wife wouldn't be the bookkeeper on this project...if she did she would probably decide not to be the wife.

She did tell me one time she thought I had 60,000 in it... I've got closer to 30... So that tells me I've got 30,000 more to work with.

"I have no recollection of that, Your Honor".

A forensics investigation could come up with a number. I just did a quick estimate of my fuel costs over 23 years and 280k miles. It kind of hurt my feelings, a little. I don't want to see any further into the abyss.

My wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I told her a new "Kershaw" as mine is over 12 years old and lost a lot of blade.
Her response "Nothing else? Nothing for the Jeep?".
Nope. You don't even want to go there.

I stopped counting after $8k in mods and maintenance in the first 2 years of ownership. But definitely curbed the spending on it since I got it to the way I envisioned it.

Don’t know, don’t care. It’s why my Wife and I worked all those years to buy and pay off a home, buy another house and fund our hobbies.
She makes quilts and probably has enough fabric to open a store.
And if C-19 or high insurance premiums don’t kill us first.....

We all know its a lot and we all have heard the saying that hasn't changed "if you're gonna play you're gonna pay"
I just keep a job folder labeled TJ when the receipts come in I just file don't need to know the number. I will say my first year of owning a jeep has certainly been more costly than five years of owning my boat when I had it hahaha

Let me tell you how they think... If you say you don't want anything for the Jeep... They think you've already bought something big or spent a bunch of money they don't know about for it.

And if you tell them you want something for the Jeep... Oh well here you go again... Spending everything on that jeep.
