Is there any issue with using high mileage oil in a low mileage motor?

You are in Michigan...

Michigan gets cold....

Use full synthetic 10w30!!!!!!
Whatever the hell brand you want.
Yes I'm serious.

We use mobil 1 here at the shop. Regular old mobil 1 unless its an audi that calls for a funky weight that we need to use their "euro"

We don't use high mileage anything and let me tell ya...we see some insane mileage.

Don't get caught up in the marketing of special "high mileage" oil.

There are enough box stores running oil specials you can find what you need on the cheap.

If you knew as much about oil as you think you do you'd realize that high mileage versions are produced by all major oil manufacturers and they are in fact highly effective at what they're designed to do... help restore seals that are no longer sealing as they did when they're new. And for those where it gets really cold like Michigan, there are high mileage versions of synthetic engine oils too.

Hey Mr can't pound a socket on a security lug...

You either leak or you don't. Perhaps you like putting a band aid on things instead of just fixing them properly but here we aren't about fantasy. It's reality.
To respect their privacy I won't list names but I've got many reps that will tell you the same thing.

In his case I'd highly advise running full synthetic 10w30 and change it every 5k.

It's nothing whatsoever to over think.

Bought my ‘02 tj with 88k miles on it with NO leaks.

Thought I was doing a good thing going in and getting an oil change with Mobil 1 synthetic. Within a day or two my Jeep developed a rear main seal leak.

After doing a bunch of research and confirming my findings here, I went to high mileage oil at my next oil change and after a while, the RMS leak slowed, then stopped.

Use synthetic if you must, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Just sayin.

Use any major brand of high mileage conventional.
Jerry, Ive developed a pretty bad RMS leak, (FWIW Ive always used conventional Valvoline 10w30) I just rebuilt the motor too(4.0), its got about 11k on it, ive seen you and others swear by the Mobil Super High mileage conventional 10W30 and how it stopped the leak in your bmw... do you think it would help my situation even though I only have 11k on the new motor? We re did the seal BTW when we rebuilt the motor

It certainly couldn't hurt. If you can't find the Mobil Super conventional, any other major brand high mileage would be a good alternative. No guarantees with your newly rebuilt engine but again, it can't hurt to try. Give it a little time to work and I'd go with a 10W-30.

I was under the impression that "High mileage" oils tend to use a zinc additive which helps with lubrication, and from what I remember isnt very beneficial to use with a new(ish) motor. My engine rebuilder told me not to use synth for at least 3k miles because it "overlubricates" or something like that. Im gonna give it a try though, its a decent leak Edit: I am actually at around 14k I just checked when my exact mileage of the rebuild

Not to be argumentative - but right now and for the next week here in Dallas it’s probably going to be colder here than Michigan.

Kirkland 5w-30 Synthetic in both my ‘03 Oreo 4.0l (pictured left) and the wife’s ‘14 Buick Enclave. Spent most of yesterday city driving in the Enclave - temp never above 30. No immediate issues presented but then I don’t make it a habit to tear the engine down for inspection every few hundred miles.

While most of the ice to now has sublimated off all our vehicles, I have not thawed Oreo out yet. Not sure if I will before the bad stuff stays hitting tomorrow. But I wouldn’t have any concerns about driving either vehicle (relative to lubrication) at these temperatures.

I’m not advocating for either oil. 😀 Just saying.

😀 YMMV

So Jerry, in my search for high mileage oils, I found three varieties. Conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic. All say they help make old dried seals pliable and help prevent leaks. From what I’ve read, the synthetic blend is about 25% full synthetic. So is one better than the other?

Synth really wont do much for these engines. Conventional all the way

Just a FYI for those wringing their hands about using synthetic because they think their engines won't last as long with a conventional. With proper oil and filter changes at appropriate intervals it doesn't matter which you use or what brand... all of today's modern engine oils are SUPERB.

And for us older guys, we remember both Mercedes Benz and Volvo were advertising heavily back in the 50's and early 60's about their engines lasting over a million miles. Guess what engine oils they were running? I'll give you one guess and it wasn't synthetic.

I choose to run a conventional because I live in a temperate climate. When would I choose to run a synthetic? I would during the winter if I lived in an extreme-cold area like Minnesota, North Dakota, Alaska, etc. Synthetic is proven and well known to flow better in extreme cold conditions. But for where I live here in SoCal, I choose to run nothing more exotic than a 10W-30 conventional. I'd happily run Valvoline, Castrol, Mobil, NAPA (made by Valvoline), Pennzoil, etc. And yes I run a High Mileage just to keep all the seals in good condition.
Exactly Jerry. This type sparring is way over thinking. Every one of us could go down to the local quick change oil change place and run used oil ...and very little would change on this forum except we would spend the difference on other mods.

I've driven a straight 6 until the rings were so worn we plumbed a hose to the dipstick tube and captured the blow by so it could run back down in the motor.

And had fun doing it.

All in all, it just doesn't matter much. I'm not trying to be a turd or insulting , but the best oil is "enough" , followed by "enough and fresh".

These engines are like strippers...it doesn't matter how you treat them them, they will be faithful as long as you keep throwing dollars at them.

Chris, please put me down for an award or something for that.

It might be over thinking for you, but I’m new to Jeep’s and asked a simple question, wanting to do what’s best for the motor. Seems the thread turned into a pissing match. I’ll be careful from now on and think before I post a question.

I'm not slamming anyone....all the oil and fuel octane threads turn into this ...what's best for the motor is to service it at regular intervals and run a stock air box.

Mainly im referring to all the sparring since your original post . ..which was a good question...what oil should I run.

And that's what people need to do is give guys like you a straight answer.

Any good oil is fine, high mileage oils don't hurt with the age, and you really can't go wrong as long as you actually service it.

I understand what you’re saying. I belong to an Indian motorcycle forum and every thread about oil, tire, fuel, etc. seems to end up in a boxing match. I’m good, no issues. Thanks for the reply. 👌

I might be older than white dog sh#t, but I’m healthy and in pretty good shape. Get in and out of the TJ with lighting speed! Thanks for the welcome.
