Hi there!

I am fairly new to the TJ world, having just bought myself a '98 this past August. I have been doing some saving and research, but am finding myself lost in what tires to get and if I want to lift my Jeep.

Right now I have all stock parts (wheels, shocks, springs...everything) and I would really like to get some bigger tires because the stock ones look dorky and small. I was thinking 31x10.5 and getting some nicer 15in wheels, but I am not sure if these will cause trouble with rubbing and such when I drive it having only stock parts. My jeep is my daily, and the furthest "off-road" I get is a little bit of snow in the mountains during the winter, and some well-driven beaches in the summer, nothing crazy. This is why I am not sure a lift would really do me any good or be the best option for just trying to get some bigger tires on there. I was also told that a nice alternative to a full-on lift would be some 2in spacers in the coil springs to get a little more clearance, but I am not sure if this is true or if my stock parts could handle it. Also, is there any benefit or downfall to getting bigger wheels? I am honestly extremely uneducated when it comes to cars, and especially when it comes to the Jeep world, which is why I came here to learn and become a better and more involved member of the community, so take it easy on me lol. Anything you have to offer will help!

31s and properly backspaced wheels will work fine. That's what Rubicons come with.

p.s. The Jeep in your avatar pic is already lifted. That's why your tires look small.

I have a 2.5L I-4 engine
It is a 5-speed manual - I believe the AX-5
And that is about all I know
This is all good for 31’s
Measure your springs to see if you have a suspension lift.
Look at the gap between the rear of the body and the bumper to see if you have a body lift

You can determine how much lift by measuring your springs. At ride height stock springs are 12" front and 8" rear. Anything more is how much lift you have.

Thank you guys for the info on determining the lift! Good to know I can get 31‘s without any problems. Have any tire brand recommendations? Is there a specific kind like all terrain or all season that are better? I live in OR, so lots of rain!

I settled for Falken Wildpeak AT/3w,s because the reviews were really good especially for wet&snow and were the best bang for buck, I couldn't see the point in paying too much when I will inevitably go bigger like everyone else does!
The snow rating will be real handy in Australia "not" lol

I've been running Duratracs here in Oregon. They're good all terrains but have an aggressive tread pattern that looks good on a Jeep. you plan to go in the mountains in the winter it's worth it to get a snow rated tire.

I wanted Duratracs but they were expensive and had to wait for them to be shipped interstate in Australia, I would assume they are a lot cheaper over there If so OP should get them, they have the Kevlar sidewalls I believe? My AT/3W are very quiet on the road so pretty happy with them for a cheaper priced tire.

No Kevlar unfortunately on the Duratracs here. I didn't plan on rock crawling with mine so I wasn't worried. Now I'm moving to AZ so that's why I'm selling mine and will upgrade to a stronger sidewall... and probably 35's. : )

304.8mm = 12"
203.2mm = 8"
Ever tried to see a fraction of a mm at 60? lol
We have both on tapes here if we want but its annoying trying to read around the wrong way Industry and trades standards are metric tape use only.
