Orygun, the wet side...
My Wavian 20 liter gas can got here today. The Latvian's sure know how to build a gas can. It's nice. Even the California nozzle is of good quality and looks like it will work just fine. It came with the can, nozzle, unleaded adapter and a spare gasket.

I figured out how and where to mount it so it's unobtrusive and doesn't interfere with any thing as well.

Pictures later...

Since you didn't post a pic I had to look it up......now I want one. Who's gonna splain it to my wife???
The UPS guy dropped mine off before I had a chance to 'splain it to mine. Not to happy about it because it kinda blew the family Jeep priorities a little. I'm in the dog house again it seems. Dang free expedited delivery! As far as your wife, you're on your own. I have a tough enough time 'splainin stuff to mine!

Anyway, I'll post up some detail pictures tomorrow. You gotta see it, it's a well made can.

As promised...here's some pictures that I took this morning of the Wavian. I threw in my old Jerry can for comparison.

The can, CARB compliant fill nozzle, unleaded adapter and one spare gasket were in the packaging. I have no idea how long or where I got the red can, it's been around forever. The lining finally gave out and bubbled up because of alcohol in the gas. The Wavian is supposed to have some sort of alkyde lining that is impervious to alcohol.

Here's a top view. You can see that the openings are very different. Screw in vs this cam action mechanical deal.

Here's the sides of the cans. So far, so good right?

Here's a comparison of the openings on the two cans. The Wavian is smaller, but the vent is much larger and better designed. You can see the clip to hold the nozzle on the Wavian. Not particularly useful. It does hold the nozzle but there is no way the nozzle will stay there without some help. I feel a strap coming on.

I thought that I would throw some detail pictures in as well. Here a closer shot of the fill mechanism. It looks kind of complicated, but it's really simple to operate. Pull pin, Flip spoon, oh sorry, flip lever, rotate lid. The lid has a slotted pivot so that it can be "locked" open. So, the lid locks open and locks closed. Nice.
Fill.jpg
Here's the pin fully inserted and flipped down to lock. It's also captured in the lid so it doesn't disappear into the night. the plastic nozzle holder is riveted to the handle, another nice touch.

Here's the pin pulled all the way out, that's as far as she goes and is stopped by a crimp on the end.

Borrowing off an idea of @Chris's, here is the can tucked in the back of the TJ.

Pretty simple to mount there. Fab an angle bracket, using the rear seat mount bolts and the sport bar for anchors. Bolt a GI Jerry can mount to the bracket and bam, gas can mounted in a TJ. It appears that if the bracket is fabbed up correctly the top will still fold up and down, and the carpet is still removable. Plus it should be sturdy as all get out being fixed to a seat mount and the sport bar mount.

I have one. Like the quality of can but don't really like the nozzle. The "safety" aspect is fine, but it doesn't angle quite right so when filling up you can't really empty entire can. but maybe I was doing something wrong. At the end of my recent trip when I used it for the first time to empty it I just took off nozzle and used a funnel.

Think I will get one of those syphon tubes with the marble

The CARB complient nozzle is pretty much useless, even though the Wavian one seems to be the best one out there. I flip the can so the bottom is pointing straight up to get the last of the gas out. Don't do that with a full can, and it's a juggling act with the CARB nozzle. Look for a straight up NATO nozzle with the rubber hose end on it. They are around, and pretty easy to find on Amazon.

Those syphons are great!

Perfect! That's exactly how I will be mounting my jerry cans, should I ever need them. I don't keep them on the Jeep, but I have them in the garage incase there's ever one of those "Oh shit, we need to bail out!" moments.

I think I need some of these cans though!

Yah, I don't keep a can in my TJ either as I don't need it very often. Maybe three or four times a year? We can have a whole discussion about bugging out though at another time in another place maybe. If you get into an "Oh shit, we need to bail out!" moment, I always advize that body bags be part of your bug out gear. I don't carry any and I hate to wrap bodies in sheets of plastic.

This is the full set of gear to get you started. If you need more than one can, you can get just the cans for about 1/3 less from the same source on Amazon.

When I get the brackets (L&R) worked out and fabbed up, do you want a set? Just a Left or just a Right? It's as cheap to fab up a dozen as it is to fab up one. The money is in the setup time. They would be a really simple bent sheet metal part out of probably less than 10 gauge. The gas can mounts are really pretty cheap on Amazon as well. Probably $25 or so, unless you have a buddy with one hanging around under a workbench or something. I intend to make them sturdy and easily removable. Pop them in when you need to, or leave them out most of the time.

I bought the same cans about a year ago from Lexington.

They sell the nozzles there. I have a straight nozzle which they have replaced with the new style and the nozzle holder isn't riveted on mine. I see they sell the old style. The cans are great. I store them in the garage and there is zero smell to tell you they are there. I can't get the last bit of gas out of them either, without scratching my Jeep. I don't carry a funnel so I put the last of the gas in one can into the other and then get what I can. I only carry them when I'm going into areas I'm uncertain of distances to fuel. Around here, more often than you think. My bumper came with mounts for two 5 gal cans. Works great. I empty them into the Jeep every couple months to keep the fuel fresh.

Here are two actual mounts that I was looking at. Don't know which one looks / works better.

One or two of those and the bracket set, and you're good to go!

When I say "bug out", I'm mostly just talking about if that earthquake happens.

But anyways, I would definitely take some of those brackets. I don't have the machines or equipment to fab them up myself (otherwise I would), and while I'm sure I could find someone to do it, it makes no sense doing that if you're already planning on doing the same thing (and you're local)!

Great! You can test out a prototype or two!

Ooh, these are cool! The conversation about gas cans in my house just went as follows:
Me: husband! Look at these gas cans! Obviously I need some. Husband: I'm already looking for Secpter military gas cans for you!
Me: Oh, carry on.

Funny they say "CARB" complaint (California Air Resources Board) but they won't ship to California. I guess if I really wanted one I could ship it my Mom's place in Medford.

Have the hubby look into the Wavian gas cans. Good kit and a NATO vendor.

How recently have you looked, @Rob5589 ? The ones I got said California CARB compliant and didn't have a shipping restriction. These cans are good kit.
