Jeep Prius or Toyota Wrangler?

My SIL & her husband flew out to Moab last month & rented a JL to ride trails with us. One night we're sitting around the fire & they were talking about how awesome they are & how they're going to be getting one soon, but they're waiting for the electric model.

I asked why, & she said "Because Dan, we're worried about the future for our children!"

I proceeded to pull up photos of lithium mining operations in Africa & explained how all this technology is just a slightly different way of ruining the planet, but if she thinks it cool that they should still buy one.

It was a bit of a rough patch.

Sounds like your SIL has a serious case of cognitive diassonance.

Yeah she’s a typical low information liberal voter. It is what it is. She’s a nice gal, just under informed in my opinion.

If the electric wrangler offered real world benefits I’d be all about it. Just doesn’t make sense to me.

I've heard that the planetary environmental impact of a priss is higher than that of a military humvee - and that includes the fuel the humvee guzzles

They also forget most power plants in the US are petroleum powered. The more electric cars on the grid, the more those plants consume to create power.

But let's not let facts get in the way.

I would rather do diesel than electric. At least for the next fifty years. Reusing oil and making biodiesel and then soap from the leftovers is not a bad way to "save the planet" and it also provides a better motor overall.

Diesel electric regenerative hybrid would be my choice. Maybe take out the transmission completely and direct drive the axles or wheels with electric motors.

The problem is expense. Buying new versus reusing old is a waste of resourses. Modifying my current configuration won't happen until it gives up. Then that setup custom built is $20k or more.

I may not spend 20k on gas in the time I own it. So there is no payback there.

Its like solar for my house. A system with batteries to load shave is $15-35,000 depending on how much i want to generate. Sun here is bad so it will never pay off.

Wind is better, but my neighborhood would never allow wind turbines in the yard. They want "renewables" to affect rural people's property, not theirs.

When the kids are gone and my wife needs a new vehicle we may look at a Toyota Camry or Rav4 hybrid. 53 and 40 mpg ranges there.
