Yes they use a hall effect pickup for speed signal, but you only need yo calibrate it if your gearing is outside of the curve. If you are running a very steep gear for your tire size the speedo will show faster. If your tire and gear size match then the speedo will be accurate.

On tj’s you need to cut and splice the wires. Says so in the instructions.
