'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee stuck in park

That ended up being the problem. When I crawled under the Jeep, I saw the socket end of the shifter cable suspended in the air. I reattached it and the gears they are engagin'! :giggle:

'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee stuck in park

Interesting, I'll check the fluid tomorrow. I should probably mention that I took the shifter panel off yesterday in a feeble attempt to line up the shift indicator with the correct gear. Perhaps I disconnected something this time around?

'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee stuck in park

Haha! If the e-brake on this Jeep can hold back the 5.9, I'd be really impressed. No, e-brake wasn't engaged, nor was the e-brake indicator light illuminated on the dashboard. Last time I checked the transmission fluid was a couple weeks ago. I'll do that tomorrow, but what am I looking...

'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee stuck in park

I got in the ZJ today, turned it on, pushed in the brake, pulled the gear shifter back to reverse, tapped the gas, and the Jeep didn't move. The engine is running, but when I move the gear shifter, I'm not hearing anything engaging from the transmission. It appears to be stuck in park no matter...

    Coolant in the transmission line?

Understood! You know what, I took the fan out to get a better look at the radiator, and the bottom part of it is deteriorating anyways. It needs to be replaced, but I'm going to flush it first before getting the new radiator on. Hopefully the seal will go back on. Any tricks to getting it back on?

    Coolant in the transmission line?

Thanks for the response! That makes sense. So if I had just pulled out the rubber hose instead of the entire metal fitting the rubber hose is attached too, ATF should have been the only fluid to come out?

    Coolant in the transmission line?

Hey guys, I'm working on the Grand Cherokee ZJ's radiator. There's an ATF leak coming from the lower transmission cooler line. I cleaned up all the oil that was on it and checked the fitting. I end up unscrewing it from the radiator and coolant came out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but coolant...

    New muffler on the ZJ

Innovative! Believe me when I say that I'm plenty satisfied with the torque the 5.9 is pumping out 21 years later, however, a nicer growl would never be discouraged. I think I'll just end up using band clamps because it's a project I'd like to learn without welding. Can you recommend a good...

    New muffler on the ZJ

The muffler on the ZJ is splitting right at the horizontal seam. I'd attempt to seal it up with some putty, but the people who judge if I meet state emissions don't deem that adequate. With that information in hand, do I need to cut or weld when putting a new muffler on the ZJ? I see it's only...

'98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L: Worth Buying?

Thanks for your take on the fix! You'd think you'd at least be able to feel your control arm has snapped or the effects of it, but I guess any bump in a Jeep is just a bump.

'98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L: Worth Buying?

I was reading that it could be as simple as low or dirty transmission fluid, which would be nice. The Jeep shifts just fine, so the problem could likely be the fluid rather than a mechanical issue. Worst case scenario, the ZJ needs a new torque convert clutch, what would one of those roughly...

'98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L: Worth Buying?

I've got my eye and heart set on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L, but it has some mechanical issues I'm not familiar with. If anyone is familiar with these issues, specially regarding the ZJs, I am all ears. Issues: Engine transmission code: P0740 Rear track bar mount broke at the axle Is...

Coolant is leaking from the bottom radiator hose

Appreciate you taking the time to give me the general gist of it. Once the coolant is drained and the hose is repaired, should I run water through the system first to determine if the leak has been fixed? Don't want to put coolant back in after fixing the hose, only to find out the hose wasn't...

Coolant is leaking from the bottom radiator hose

Thanks for that information, @Chris! Forgive me, as I'm learning on this one. So, if it is the radiator hose that needs replacing, did it just like lose its integrity over the years, and even with the clamp, couldn't create a tight enough seal? If I take that bottom radiator hose off, should I...

Coolant is leaking from the bottom radiator hose

Another day, another fix! Hope this one is easy. There appears to be a small leak coming from the bottom radiator hose. A drop falls once every 7 seconds or so and I've had to refill the coolant reservoir. I assume the seal where the bottom radiator hose connects to the radiator is shot. Am I...
