    New computer purchase help

Based on my 50 years experience in data processing and digital communications, I suggest that you acquire a mid-range Dell desktop, with an i7 processor. When you purchase the computer, you will see an option for extended support. Purchase the support. From then on, help is a simple chat or...

All Lenovo brand IT gear is what IBM developed and used to sell under the IBM PC label. They sold half interest to China a few years ago and then sold all of it. IBM is out of the PC business entirely.

Anybody up for a random meme dump?

I had to go to the hospital a few months ago. Of course, they charge for parking and used to have these kiosks where you pay with actual money or a credit card. They were gone. Instead, there's a big sign on the fence with a code. The sign tells me to scan the code, set up an account, and...

Another Charlie-Foxtrot from the Atlanta Veterans Administration I have had thyroid disease for 40 years. No big deal; I take one pill a day and I’m good. Recently our benevolent government decided it was acceptable to charge as much as possible for this little pill (Synthroid) that’s been...

Another snipe! I was the only 'fireman' to go through ET A school on Treasure Island. I thought the big guns had liners that could be replaced after they were worn. Any Gunner's Mates that know about that?

Since we are now on the subject of 16" guns, used on the Iowa class BB, here is a little known fact. After active duty I went to work for the US Naval Oceanographic Office, located then in the Washington (DC) Navy Yard. I roll in my first day and discover about half of the ground floor of our...

I agree. Those big guns were maintenance intensive. The powder bags left all kinds of junk in the barrels. Mix that with salt laden air and you could have some real problems. So they had to be cleaned and oiled regularly, as mentioned above. And yes, those old battlewagons had steel decks...

    Headlights won't work after collision

The high beams and low beams are usually on different wires. I would check them. Another thing you could do is get a small jumper wire and run it from the POS terminal on the battery directly to the connector tabs on the back of the headlight and see if it lights.

    Headlights won't work after collision

If you wired your new headlights through a relay, check the relay. Use a voltmeter and be sure it is working. Check all the connections to the relay and/or switch. Check the wires on the lights, especially the common wires, like ground. I am fairly certain you will find either a disconnected...

I I don't know much about bird farms. I spent five years on a 'special' ship, T-AGS class. Most Navy ships have a home port. They go out to sea for a week or a month, then come back to their home port for a week or month or whatever. We had no home port. We went to most ports on the East...

Anybody up for a random meme dump?

It's real. In the '50s and '60s Mom would say, "Get out until I call you for dinner." We made our own play: baseball, football, sledding, building a treehouse, digging a swimming pool, flying kites, launching rockets, builading a snow fort, and riding bikes. Never bored. If we got tired, we...
