Interment knock on startup, once I turn off and restart it is gone

Hey all I’ve had my 2005 TJ 4.0 for about 50,000 miles. Since purchase, it will very sporadically knock on startup, almost like it’s missing. I then immediately turn off and restart and noise is gone. No code is thrown, no check engine light. I have the car fax for this vehicle and it does...

TJ Dana 44 rear axle seal leak driving me crazy

Thanks again for this Last question, for now… do you lubricate the axle shaft with anything before assembling the seal and bearing?

Having the same issue, numerous attempts. Did you go with the national? Any update would be appreciated.

TJ Dana 44 rear axle seal leak driving me crazy

Mr Blaine! Glad you weighed in, I forgot about the Timken. Can’t tell you how helpful reading your advice has been to me. Appreciate it. Couple quick questions about how YOU DO this job: Rtv on edge of seal or no? Replace 4 nuts or factory with loctite? 45 foot lbs of torque on those nuts...

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

Hmm, interesting…in all my other reading I haven’t heard of this. I guess for now I’m leaning towards it being a poor quality seal or the vent being clogged, but thank you for your response!

TJ Dana 44 rear axle seal leak driving me crazy

Bringing this thread back cuz I’m fighting the same damn leak…this last effort was with a brand new crown assembly shaft, bearing and assembly already pressed on. It seems the consensus is that the only seals that are proven to work are the nationals or the spicer. Would this be a fair assumption?

Thanks for this. Those part numbers are for a Dana 44 with disc brakes, correct?

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

Could those small holes, I’m assuming on the side, just below the cap be plugged? The cap was on there pretty tight, my next move is to drive it awhile with the cap off to see if those small holes being clogged are the culprit…

So here sorry, your saying you are running the Timken seal and have had no leaks?

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

Just did some more reading, and I’m thinking your right. National or spicer seems to be the the right move.

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

Thanks for this. Already read the whole thread, but after reading it again I’m leaning towards it being a crappy crown seal.

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

Not only did I check the vent, but I pulled off the cap on it…not sure how it breathes with that on there…

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

I was hoping by replacing the whole assembly I’d ensure I’d have the correct seal.

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

Not only did I check it, but I removed the cap. Not sure how that breathes with the cap on…

Leaking Rear Axle Seal Dana 44

I guess my biggest question is can I remove the shaft and RESET the seal to make sure it’s seated correctly? It’s only been in there for a few days…
