PSA: Do your self a favor and wear PPE!

I prefer an on off switch paddles are annoying.

If you’re like me and hate bulky face shields I use a face shield goggle. If you ever have to grind anywhere but a bench they’re a lot less cumbersome. And goggles are a lot safer than safety glasses/shields.

Machinist here too. I've seen my share of injuries at work. Won't go into details here.
Once got a tiny sliver of metal in my eye, working on my girlfriends brakes on the street.
Guess a passing car kicked it into my eye. A few mm and I would lost vision. Waited a week before going to the eye hospital.
The metal had rusted in my eye. After the metal was removed, the doctor used something like a dremel to grind the rust out.
Safety glasses are a must. And never wear fabric gloves with any spinning tools, if you value your fingers...
Something similar happened to me a long time ago when I cut a chimney pipe without glasses at work. A tiny bit of steel got stuck in my eye. I didn't care at first, thinking it would go away by itself but the next day it was still there and spreading rust around. I also felt the worst headache I ever had. So I went to the hospital to remove it and it was quite scary to see the doctor using power tools on my eye. Needless to say I always wear glasses when I use the grinder since then.

glad to see this thread. maybe it will make someone think before grinding , cutting or drilling and save an eye or other injury. i had just posted on this same subject this week trying to make sure someone drilling their frame would wear safety glasses ! i know many backyard mechanics will think it's only going to take a minute "what could happen in a minute?" it only takes a fraction of a second to effect the rest of your life !!!!! I know ppe's can be a pain in the ass, glasses get in the way and fog up as do face shields. respirators are a pain the the ass to put on and are hot and get in the way. there's a excuse for not using all of them but you'll think of many reasons you should of used them on the way to the ER or while in the back of the ambulance headed there !!!!!!!

Hmmm maybe I should buy a face shield, I always use safety glasses but looks like that wouldn't help here. In the past I've been under my car grinding off a bolt or something with my angle grinder right near my face, I didn't even consider how dangerous it was until I was looking back at it afterwards

Yes. (but since it's already too late, chicks dig scars)

Came here to say this!

I've been known to rely on "safety squints" some times. But not with a grinder!

I have a shallow groove on my left forearm from a grinder. Started a fire and I switched it off but didn't wait for it to spool down in my rush and swiped it across my arm. Don't drink and grind, folks.

These are great. Pricey compared to a standard face shield, but worth it in my opinion.

Idk about pricey... 20$ seems really reasonably for this honestly... I'm adding this onto my buy list, I'm horrified by these eye stories. Used to work with a machinist that said they used a magnet to get a shaving out of his eye, eugh. I bet it'd be nice just for laying on the back and working on a muddy jeep too

Pricey by having to explain to the boss why I bought 30 ea for the shop. For an individual that isn't using them 25 hrs a week to me they are a no brainer.

Some of the guys with prescription safety glasses still used the normal shields, but most used these. And because they liked them it made it easier to ensure compliance.

Okay yeah that's quite a few of them. But that's great, gotta take care of your people!

I bet prescription safety glasses are nice - I am kinda hoping I can wear normal glasses under this mask. But hey, I'll take blurry-while-I-work over can't-see-forever any day of the week lmao

that's my main reason for wanting a shield is to avoid paying out the ass for a pair of prescription safety glasses

I drove for 6 years before I realized I couldn't see... I can handle a few minutes under the jeep with my prescription squints if I gotta

Make sure the sparks are coming back at you (hence the guard!) when using a cut off wheel. If you bind up the force will "pull" the grinder away from you. Sparks heading away from you, the tool will kick back towards you.

Improper use, out-of-balance operator, not having a firm grip on the tool, the "it's only a quick cut" moment because you're in a hurry causes bad situations. Failure to use PPE causes things like these.
