Anyone else into RC rock crawling?

the trail finder isn't complete yet in those pictures, and its still not entirely complete yet, but its coming along!

If we had an area to fly like that, id probably have an airplane or 6 also. There is actually an RC air field not far from my home, but its not a very exciting place to fly. Theres a gravel pit, directly behind the airfield, so if you happen to go down for whatever the reason your plane is pretty much gone.

If one were going to dabble in planes, what would you suggest as a plane to purchase?

I was really into RC cars for a long time and built an Axial 4wd buggy and have a Traxxas slash 2wd that I just used for speed.

I have the RedCat Racing Rockslide RS10XT that I love to play with around camp. My son just recently purchased the Redcat Racing Terramoto 10. I can go over just about anything but his is a total speed demon. Great fun at a more budget friendly price. I'll add photos when I get home.

I've been into scale rock crawling since before it came out it seems like.

I've built a number of custom crawlers and RTR crawlers. Currently I've got an Axial SCX10, Axial Bomber, and an Axial Wraith.

Here's some photos of my Axial Bomber I'm in the process of building:

I used mostly Vanquish parts, and was fortunate to find a good chunk of them on eBay:

It's turning out great so far, but man is it expensive. Hard to believe, but I've sunk probably close to $2000 into this Bomber if you account for the vehicle itself, all the parts, etc.

EDIT: Sorry guys, I didn't think all those links were going to turn into a list that long! Just trying to show people how much it can realistically cost to build one of these scale crawlers using high quality parts.

Wow, that thing looks awesome! I hope you don't mind but I'm totally going to have to copy your build to some degree. I just started building an Axial Bomber myself!

I've been looking at some of the Vanquish parts for a while, and man are those things hard to find. I spoke with Vanquish about it personally and I guess they just can't keep up with the demand. They told me they don't even know when they will get more of the parts back in stock. Nearly every part on their website is listed as "out of stock", which is frustrating.

Anyways, thanks for posting those links. There's a number of parts that that I hadn't yet started looking for, but it appears the sellers still have a few left, so you've actually unknowingly done some of the work for me in finding these parts :ROFLMAO:

Post some photos of your Bomber when you get it done. I love the look of the Bomber in general.

I’m bringing this thread back!

I’ll be bringing mine with me to tj fest 2022 if any of y’all with RC crawlers will be coming

I don't much go in for the scale stuff that's all the rage now. I'm living in the past with this moa comp crawler. It looks like an alien and sticks to rocks like a bug. Front and rear dig, monster articulation. I'll prolly add rear steer if I ever get "done" with my Jeep.

I’ve seen a few of these at the local spots and they’re crazy sticky, damn near crawl anything. I really just have them for fun I’ve never done any of the competitions

You know, just like their 1:1 counterparts, the vehicles are insanely capable, but a great driver makes all the difference. I'm getting pretty good with my rig, but there's this kid in Finland that I watch on YouTube, Samu Sarka, makes me look like an infant piloting a stack of Lincoln logs.

My first RC vehicle was a 1985 Tamiya Bruiser. I think it was one of the first 4wd trucks produced. The thing was always blowing the transmission or tranfer case. It's a relic compared to todays RC cars.
I do have a Axial SCX10 JKU that I bought a couple of years ago. I used it maybe once and it was sitting on the shelf for a while.
My one son just picked up a Redcat Racing trail rig, so now I have someone to trail ride with.

My brother has a huge collection of RC vehicles (60+) stemming back from the early 80's.

Have you seen the new scx6?

since I didn't get to go to Colorado and wheel in a real Jeep, I ordered an Axial SCX10 III while I was feeling sorry for myself.

It's a base model with a generic but vaguely Toyota looking truck body but it'll give me an opportunity to tinker.

1692204440760.png

I'd love to build it into a replica of my LJ but haven't found a body for it. There are JK bodies aplenty but honestly if I can't do a LJ or a CJ6 or 8 I'd rather go completely different and do an early Bronco or replicate a childhood favorite movie prop vehicle like Marty McFly's Toyota or the Fratelli's XJ from The Goonies.

There are tons of XJ bodies out there. Injora makes a good hard body but there’s tons. Pro line and j concepts make good ones and then wish and AliExpress can get you a bunch. I believe I found a tj body somewhere on wish and was going to order but never did. I just got done building a carbon fiber chassis LCG power wagon.

Currently working on a dually ford build.
1692233839971.jpeg

Both of these are TRX4 based builds and running brushless

There are a bunch of folks that can 3D print you a body of your choosing. Check out thingiverse for free files and then fiver if you want to pay someone to make you the stl and then someone else to print it.

Welcome to the other hobby!

thanks for the suggestions, I've got some shopping to do!

Nice collection you've got there! I don't know why it excites me so much but it's so cool that there are scale replicas of real wheels and tires. :ROFLMAO:

I had some inexpensive kids RC cars when I was young and they were fun but this whole realistic suspension thing is an entirely new level and reignites my interest having stuff that isn't just cheap plastic that's gonna break the first time I actually run it into something.
