I just changed the oil in the rear differential (Valvoline 80w90) in my 02 TJ. Now the rear end whines when decelerating. Any ideas?
I'm pretty handy but certainly not a true mechanic. Constantly seeking knowledge!

Typically that is an indicator of a pinion noise - It would be good to get a qualified shop to check it. I don’t know why you’re hearing it unless your old fluid had gotten so thick that it was keeping it quiet - It may increase your odds of getting it corrected by not driving it too much right now- But you may have wear-

You should have about 2 quarts of fluid in the differential

The Sounds Of Death/ Randys world wide.

A “whirring” sound generated by unloading via deceleration from most any regular road speed can likely be traced to pinion bearing failure or poor pinion bearing preload. This malady is often diagnosed as a bad ring and pinion gear.

Check your pinion nut. When I had my first TJ regeared I had the same noise going on. Shop showed me the pinion nut was loose and the pinion had about 1/8” of play. They said they saw it all the time on Dana 35 axles.

Some things are hard to check when you're laying on your back! Guess I need to make friends with someone that has a lift!!! Thanks

It is worth it to make the effort rather than lose your gears - Since it’s just started there might be hope that you can quieten it back down...But if you keep driving it you’re going to go down a bad road possibly.

Not necessarily. It’s as simple as pulling on the shaft. I found the video they sent me.

Just making sure it was a GL-5. If it is a GL-5 what you added was fine, maybe bearings or a gear were starting to go bad prior to the gear lube change.

Is it a limited slip? Isn’t there an additive that’s has to be added to help the friction plates in there which if not added causes problems?
