The Official Jeep Wrangler TJ Oxygen (O2) Sensor Thread

Bank 1 sensor 1 (upstream) should be just below the flange, mating the pipe to the manifold, bank 1 sensor 2 (down stream) should be between the catalytic converter and the muffler... That being said I suppose it's possible someone could have installed a different catalytic converter that has it "in" the body of the cat???
I'm sure the Transfer case blowout took out the original catalytic converter. I'll probably drop the skid in the next few days and try to get a good look at the CC.
I'm thinking now that there's no place to put the downstream sensor, that's why they tucked it up into the frame.

The upstream is in the correct spot, thankfully.

I dropped the skid today to take a closer look at the CC and to re-run the x-case, the transmission, and the fuel pump wiring.
Looks like an aftermarket, Eco II CC that does have a o2 sensor plug in the body.
I think I'm going to order the downstream sensor and attempt to install it correctly where the plug is.

I just replaced all of the O2 sensors on my 2004 4.0, and Rockauto shows NTK 23531 for bank 2 sensor 2 instead of 23131... Did I put the wrong one in or are these interchangeable? I haven't had any issues in the month since I installed it though.

Also, for those here researching O2 sensor codes, mine threw an O2 sensor code, but I'm not sure any were actually bad, because the root of the problem was one of the precats broke up and was clogging the exhaust... But I was at 90k miles and decided to replace all the sensors anyway while I replaced the cats. So make sure there isn't some other problem causing the O2 code. If you're on all original parts and getting up there in miles it might be a good idea to just replace everything anyway - it's easier to access the O2 sensors when the downpipe is out. Total cost for 4 sensors and downpipe with precats and new cat was about $450. I probably could have saved a few $ somewhere else, but Rockauto was able to get everything to me the fastest.
Hi, What are precats and cats?

This thread has been very helpful!
Small victory a couple days ago.
I was able to get the CC plug out. It took PB blaster, and the torch to get it to bust free. Double hinged ratchet helped too.
10mm Hex.

Installed the new downstream sensor.

Also, I tried to order the Upstream sensor for the 97 4.0. NTK Part # 23151
Rock Auto had 1 left. Unfortunately they sent me a out of stock notice soon after I placed the order.
Then I got the item discontinued notice. Looks like more early TJ parts on the chopping block.

I’ve got some exhaust work to do on my 2000 (only 2 sensors) and will be replacing the O2 sensors as well. The upstream #23151 is discontinued but I found the downstream #23099.

The notes make it seem like I can use this sensor for upstream and downstream. Am I on the wrong path of thinking here?

Not sure where Rock auto came up with the number for the upper, but there has always been a little confusion with the 2000 model year because or the CA vs Fed Emissions difference. Here's a couple screen captures of NGK's page for the 2000 O2 sensor look up. I can verify which are ones you need tomorrow after I get home from work. I had to call NGK directly to make sure which were the right 2 for the Fed Emissions.

Here's the one you should need for your upper on a 2000 4.0l Federal Emissions Jeep Wrangler.

All 4 of mine have arrived from Amazon. Worth noting that there is one for an 06 4.0 that Amazon still flags as not compatible.

Thanks for this thread!

I have read that for. 2003 Rubi the 04 cats is what you want to use. Anyone know if this is true?

Need to replace my cats will do sensors as well.

Is the one that Amazon flags as non-compatible the Bank @ sensor 1, NTK part # 23159?

Yep, 23159 for bank 1, sensor 2.

I was getting intermittent P0133's, so I just replaced all 4. I just did it yesterday evening. I also put on a new Stant gas cap for P0456 - Small EVAP leak. Both are still throwing codes so I'm going to disconnect the battery here in a lil bit and reset it.

So after changing all 4 sensors and clearing the codes, P0133 came back last night. I'm assuming it's an issue with one of the pre-cats.

I'm having some engine shudder issues. Say I'm traveling down the road at 65 and get stopped at a red light. While I'm sitting there at a stop, sometimes the engine will shudder for a couple seconds and RPMs will drop. Not much, say 500 RPM maybe? It almost feels like it's trying to shut off, then it goes back to normal all while waiting on the light. Light turns green and drive off and everything is fine.

Are these issues related?
