My 90 plus year old grandfather (a retired stick welder) suggested I bolt this thing up to my Jeep as an aux fuel tank. Apparently, it came from an old boat he recently disposed of.

First off, I'mnot doing that, but is it something that people would have done decades ago? šŸ˜†

Looks like part of a scud missle. In the old days you could use anything didnt leak for a gas tank. Lots of buggies ran beer Kegs. With todays emissions crap and FI its more a PITA and in most states it would never fly at smog check.

That looks a lot like an old artillery shell to me.
What does the base look like?
Its def a shell. Give me till tomorrow, I'll shoot more detailed photos and post them.

The old man confirmed, though, def a shell. Just not sure from what. He said he found it in a dump in Miami, more than 30 years ago.

@SkylinesSuck that idea is phenominal! šŸ‘

Why do you even need an auxiliary fuel tank? There are gas stations everywhere. Just get gas before you go off-road.

I don't need one. Never wanted one.

Point of my post was to ask if its ever been done. I don't even have a spare on neither of my Jeeps. Carry one in the back when offloading, though.

Iā€™m sorry, I genuinely assumed he gifted it to you bc you wanted one. No offense intended.

My dad and uncle never ran auxiliary tanks in the old V8 flatfenders. Just 2 tanks, 1 under each front seat. I think aroundish 18 gallons total. One of the old timers had what he said held 22 gallons in a single tank that stretched between both front seats.
The only time I can remember running out of fuel with my dad was after one of his rebuilds he couldnā€™t remember what switch, switched the tanks. It made me laugh, but quietly inside, he was pissed
