Gear Pattern Check- LP Dana 44 rear. I think I may need to increase the pinion depth by a few thou? Right at 0.008/0.009 backlash.

After some more trial and error- backlash at ~7.5 thou. How does this look?

A separate question- the ARB copper air line seems to be pinched between the bearing cap and the housing. Is this normal?

Pattern looks better how much did you change it? As for the ARB I believe in the instructions it calls for putting a notch in the bearing cap for clearance.

I think it ended up being 0.01 more pinion depth and 0.004 more in the right side of the carrier. I'm at 0.039 pinion depth, 0.050 left carrier, and 0.055 right carrier.

Regarding the air line, looks like I need to move it up into the oil entry for the axle tube and route it around the top of the bearing cap.

Can someone comment on my pattern?

Backlash is 0.009

HP or LP axle? where is .009 BL in your spec range,?

and your loading the ring as you turn it?

HP

Spec is 0.004-0.009 and loaded as I can with a leather glove.

The axle is out of the vehicle so I can't use the brakes.

Something just isn't right to me. Your patterns look very inconsistent and odd to me. I would remove the carrier and make sure the bearing seats and races are completely clean. I have found that when I see patterns like this that the carrier isn't seated all the way. Pull and reset it in there again. Sometimes tightening the bolts down tight instead of just finger tight helps to seat it all the way too.

I've seated the carrier pretty good, so doubt that is the issue.

The pinion is very shallow now, and I was unable to measure the old pinion depth, so I had nothing to go off of. I'm just guessing at this point.

Then I would bracket it and then fine tune it.

This pattern is the result of moving the pinion farther away from the ring gear. The drive side used to further towards the Toe, so I thought I was going in the correct direction.

you got the experience to say what i was thinkin, but wasn't sure of.

Moved the pinion away from the ring gear by 0.01 and then adjusted the backlash to 0.004

The pattern looks much better to me.

I moved in closer by 0.0025 and this is how it looks now.

What gears are you using? Are they used gears? Backlash is too tight for my liking. For what you have shown so far I think you are probably as close as you are going to get.

The odd patterns still make me wonder. The areas circled are jagged instead of smooth and diffuse... not sure why. Could be normal but it would drive me crazy.
