Should I replace the fuel pump while the tank is out?

Having fuel tank dropped on my 99 wrangler to replace skid plate and straps. Your opinion on whether I should replace fuel pump now even though it is working fine?

I think this depends a lot on mileage and whether you're doing the labor yourself. If you're paying somebody to do it and you have higher miles, it might be worth peace of mind since they're already doing 90% of the labor. Also, whether your check valve still works or whether you have to prime it a few times as it is now. The downside is Bosch no longer makes the fuel pump assembly, so I believe Delphi makes the next best one. The factory Bosch-made unit on my 97 was still going strong at 198k. I preventatively replaced it with a Delphi and the check valve started giving me problems within 3k miles.

I've though about making one of those, I didn't know you could buy them. Can you cut the opening with the tank and lines still in place?

There is enough space to cut with the tank in place but there’s always a risk of igniting fuel vapor, which would go very poorly. I personally don’t like to spark or weld around fuel lines or tanks but it is technically possible if you’re careful.

How do you know the pump and regulator are good? The vehicle can still run good but fail a pressure/leakdown test. Does it start right up after sitting awhile or does it take a bit more cranking? In my case Jeep runs fine but after sitting cranks longer so I'm replacing it with a Bosch, the guys on the forum steered me right and my diagnosis pointed to the pump/regulator.

I just ordered a pressure regulator. My pressure goes from 45 running to 35 immediately after key off and then zero inside of 20 minutes. Takes either three ignition on/off cycles to reprime or a long crank.

I want a new skid. Can't afford $692 right now. I think I have a replacement Bosch pump for the assembly... probably going to drop the tank this weekend and at least do the regulator.

Rokmen skids are reasonably priced. Installed them on my 06 TJ and LJ without issue.

I'm in the sure, go ahead and replace crowd. I did that (with an OEM Bosch assembly) when my shop installed my GenRight tank, Jeep was 20 years old and on it's original pump. Kept the original assembly as a spare, since that unit had been discontinued. Sourced a pump motor unit on the Am and can rebuild my old assembly. Do still have another new in the box pump assembly, too.I think they'll take my keys away from me before I run out of fuel pumps.

Rokmon is $274 for steel. 3/16.

Any idea of the weight?

UCF's 3/16" aluminum claims 20 lbs and no weight spec on the 1/4" - which is $692.

Sounds like we all have plans for pumps/gas tanks this weekend!

I have a steel one I could make you a deal on.
